SOURCE: Will not boot to Safe Mode

Try to boot from the Resource CD by selecting the <F12> key and select boot from CD/DVD drive. If you tried to run the "Diagnostics" option from the <F12> boot menu and it went to command prompt, there might be an issue with your hard drive or the "Diagnostics" partition is corrupted or missing. If all tests pass using the Resource CD, then your OS is probably hosed. As for the 9 LED light, that just indicates that your numeric keypad is enabled.

SOURCE: unmountable boot volume

hi,

-this can be a hardware problem or a software problem
-run diagnostics first on the computer
-turn off computer; while the computer is off, press and hold the "Fn" key then press power at the same time to initialize the test
-if you find error message like 0142 - this is a hard drive failure; contact your manufacturer for replacing your hard drive
-if no error is found, it is a corrupted Windows; you need to reinstall Windows, ensure you consult local technician to back-up files before installation.

cheers!

Starting problem

Immediately after seeing the Dell logo, keep tapping the 'F8' key,
until you see a "menu" (white text over a black background)
giving "startup" options for Windows XP.

Select "Safe Mode" and see if you can start in that mode.
Then, use "System Restore" to go "back" in time, to the most-recent checkpoint (date/time) where your computer _DID_ work.

Restore to that point, and restart.

Cyclic boot and reboot after installing SP2

If you have the Windows XP recovery disk you should boot into the disk and do a repair install of the Windows OS. You can also press 'F8' before or right after the Windows XP splash screen comes up and tell it to either boot into Safe Mode or "Boot with last configuration that worked". If you boot into safe mode, go to control panel and programs and uninstall the sp2 installation. Please comment back if you need further assistance. I will be providing a How-To on how to recover a system using system CDs today.

Good Luck,

Windows XP SP2 will not boot after installing new SATA hard drive

Your system thinks the "second" drive has precedence over the first ( your boot drive ) try switching the SATA cables between the two drives. There also might be a BIOS setting under Boot Order, sometimes you have to drill down to get to it for a particular drive.
