Question about Linksys BEFSR41 Cable/DSL Router W/4 Port Switch, Retail Box (DSLSBEFSR41)

1 Answer

Power problem Been using the same Lynsis BEFSR41 router for the past 8 years or so with no major issues (outside of reseting router for connection). While I was away this weekend my wife called and told me the connection just dropped. She tried resetting the router with no progress. When I got home I did the same with similar results. When I plug the power cord into the router I now get a blinking power light instead of the solid light the power normally shows. Did the router short out? Can this be easily fixed or should I just get a new router?

Sounds like your faithfull router has finnaly had enough and need to be put to rest, if it lasted that long thats one good router, id say go out and treat yourself to another faithfull router, i had mine last me about 4 years before a firmware update disabled it for the time being untill i get around to fixing it

Without a model number, it's difficult to tell you exactly how to resolve this issue. What you need to do is make sure that your modem is set to bridge mode. You'll need to plug directly into the modem, access the web interface that it uses (usually 192.168.0.1 or something similar) and set it to function as a bridge instead of a router. You should disable DHCP as well, but before you do that make sure you know how to do a full reset of the modem so that it will return to factory settings because disabling DHCP makes it tricky to access the web interface which means if you need to access it again later, you'll need to do a full reset.

I'm trying to re hook up my Linksys BEFSR41 Cable/DSL Router after 4 years. I go thru all the steps from the CD and get stuck where they ask me fir a password. I type in ADMIN snf t goes thru the cycle...

Try this: reset your router to the factory settings by holding down the reset button while the router is plugged in for 30 seconds. Once it's done, your default username and password will be admin. Connect your router to a computer via ethernet cable, open internet explorer, firefox, safari, etc. doesn't really matter which browser you use and type in the address bar 192.168.1.1 and press Enter. it will ask for a username and a password, type admin for both.
Now you have accessed your router(don't worry about the CD). Go to wireless and then wireless security and select WPA2 Personal as your encryption type then choose a password, it's has to be at least 8 characters long(letters, number or both). Hit Save settings on the bottom. You now have a secured wireless network. Connect your cable/DSL modem to your router, reset the router by unplugging it and plugging it back in and wait till both your modem and router are up. Now try to connect and you should be able to go online :)
Good luck and let us know how that worked out for you ;)

WRT160N Wireless Router : i just bought a new laptop and a lynsis wrt160n......

The wired and wireless speed will always be different.
The maximum wired speed will be 100 Mbps. That means the wired connection is working properly.
Wireless connection speed will depend on the router and the wireless adapter on your computer.
If you are using B-Adapter then max speed will be 11 MBPS. IF it is G-Adapter then max speed will be 54 Mbps.
The N-adapter will give you more speed.
Check in the Device manager which adapter you are using on your wireless computer.
One more thing you can try changing the wireless channel on the router.
You will need to access the router settings page.
Update the drivers of your wireless adapter on the computer.
You have WRT160N router.
This router has issues with the Firmware.
Is there any computer connected to the router with the cable.
If not then you will need to connect the computer to the router.
Download the firmware of the router from the manufacturer's website.
enter the model number. select proper version number and download the firmware of the router.
Once you download the firmware, you will need to open the router set up and upgrade the firmware of the router.
After upgrading the firmware, it is recommended that you reset and reconfigure the router.

You can do it manually without the CD.

have you done a chat with Linksys? What do you use to manage your network?

May I suggest you get Network Magic, a free download and eval period.

Using Network Magic, you may find you have settings on the router that prevent your getting past your 'fire wall'.

If the power light keeps blinking it means that the router has reached its end point or else you have short circuited the board, or the router is reached up to the maximum whereby it has totally failed. The best would be to replace that router now or try to use a software named tftp to get into the router interface if it is possible then upgrade the firmware/ You can get tftp by searching in google.

Hi,

The only way to revive the router is by doing a reset. If it still won't work I hate to be the to tell you this but the router is busted. Consider yourself lucky that it worked flawlessly for eight years. =)

Power off the router by unplugging it. Also power off the DSL or cable router. Shut down the PC. Located on the back side of the router is a small reset button. Using a pen press and hold for ten seconds. Same for the DSL or cable. Power every thing back up starting with the DSL/cable, than the router and lastly the PC.
