Question about Canon DM-XM2 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Image quality issue after capturing to HDD from XM2

I have a Canon XM2 DV camcorder that I have been using for a while now. The image quality is superb, until I try to capture it onto my hard-drive. After having tried every program I can think of, I still have the same problem: every time there is movement in the frame, it blurs into horizontal lines.
It doesn't do this on the tape, and it doesn't happen on the screen on the camera, it only occurs on playback once the video has been captured.
If anyone has any ideas, a solution is needed a.s.a.p.

I have the same problem: picture appears "digitized" especially on the edges of people and objects when movement occours. With "digitized" I mean pixeled, stripy (little vertical or horisontal stripes on the edges of people and objects). On a closer look it looks like the whole picture is pixeled, a little like a low res video enlarged.

Footage is recorded in 16:9 and transferred to iMovie via firewire.

After testing a little I found that the problem is caused by Interlacing. Solution: Swich the Movie Mode from Normal to Frame on the XM2 (Turn on in Camera mode, press Menu -> Cam. Set Up -> Movie Mode -> Frame) and re-shoot.

About interlacing read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interlace (Thanks to Zak Ray for that one).

I have tried to connect my Canon XM2 to my IMac via firewire, but it is not 'seen' by IMovie, FCE or FCP, so I can't capture anything. Thanks

Open the System Profiler on the Mac and establish if the camera is connected to the Mac's firewire BUS. If not, try another cable and also test is the camera's firewire port is working. It's either a cable or socket issue. Some cameras require that the menu of the camera be set to output over firewire, check this as well.

How do I transfer the footage I recorded to PC?

The USB cable is only to download still images recorded on the memory card, using the software that came with the camera. To download video, you need to connect to a computer with a Firewire cable, and have video editing software on your computer to communicate with the camera.

Great video on play back in the view finder but poor on the PC

you have problem in capturing your video.
you better use firewire to do it much better than old analog capturing device.
Firewire is almost a hundred percent no loss of quality.
just try it and find how.
remember also that AVI file is better to any compressed formatted file.

I have xm2 canon, and I can't find the night vision mode on it.

I do not believe XM2 or GL2 does not have night vision mode. You may achieve little using video gain control. We all know Sony has the night vision modes which have been popular feature. James

Can my camcorder work with imovie and if so how do i get my computer to get download my video?

Open iMovie and set it to capture DV. (Click the camera shaped icon opposed to the siscor scissor shape) When you see a blue screen that says (camera connected) and the image pops on screen of image from tape on camcorder set in play mode, you hit the import button and it begins to capture digital movie using DV compression of whatever you have on tape. You should be able to control your camcorder with the video controllers underneath the project window to make selections for the in and outpunts on the tape you wish to capture. Then switch to edit mode by clicking on the scissor button and import the movies you just captured or use them from the clips menu, etc. renedr movie back to tape, if you wish by clicking back and forth from edit mode (scissors) and capture mode (camera silo) and render to and from tape.
