To get a firm grip on your knife blade, you should have your thumb firmly placed on one side and your index finger on the other side of your knife. With the remaining 3 fingers loosely curled around the handle. It might feel a bit of an unnatural grip to start with but you will soon get used to it and it's a safe way to hold your knife.

Do I need to sharpen my knife?

Every time you use your knife, the edge will become slightly less sharp, and you are more likely to injure yourself with a dull blade than a sharp one, as they can slip while you are working. Make sure you buy good knife-sharpening steel and use it each time before cutting with your knife it will also prolong your knife.

How much money should I spend on kitchen knives?

The most important kitchen knives are the paring knife, the cleaver, the fileting knife and the chef's knife. I personally use a German steel paring knife, which costs around $70, but you can spend as little as $20 and get an excellent knife that will do the job. On a cleaver you can spend a fortune, but you can find very good cleavers at around 10$(try at your local market).
On a chef's knife, the Prices for good knives range from around $40 to as much as you care to spend. I use a slightly smaller Japanese ceramic chef's knife and a German steel knife. As a filleting knife, I use a midlevel knife costing around $40. But there are excellent versions available for under $20.

What's a chef's knife?

A good chef's knife (usually around 8 inches long and 1.5inches wide) is the single most important knife you will ever buy. It can be used for everything from slicing and chopping vegetables to cutting joints of meat

How do I change the two blades

Operator's manual for 22-547 portable planer is here.

Page 10 and 11 discusses the process of changing the knives in detail. I'd like to reiterate the manual's comment about how sharp these knives are. Use gloves or be VERY careful.

Per manual:

1. DISCONNECT THE TOOL FROM THE POWER SOURCE.

2. Lower the head assembly by turning handle (B) Fig. 15.

3 Remove chip deflector (A) Fig. 19.

4. Carefully place knife setting gage (B) Fig. 20, on the cutterhead so the rounded sections are directly over the knife as shown.

5. Loosen the knife locking bar by turning the seven knife locking screws, six of which are shown at (C) Fig. 21, CLOCKWISE and carefully remove knife locking bar (D) Fig. 22, knife (E), and springs (not shown) which are located under the knife.

6. Remove the remaining knife in the same manner.

7. Thoroughly clean the knife slots, knife locking bars and screws. Check the screws. If the threads appear worn or stripped or if the heads are damaged, replace them.

8. Carefully replace the springs (not shown), knives (E) Fig. 22, and knife locking bars (D), into both slots of cutterhead (F). IMPORTANT: WHEN REPLACING KNIFE LOCKING BARS (D) AGAINST KNIVES (E), AS SHOWN IN THE CROSS-SECTIONAL ILLUSTRATION Fig. 22, MAKE CERTAIN THE BARS ARE INSTALLED AS SHOWN, WITH
SCREWS (C), POSITIONED AT THE TOP OF KNIFE LOCKING BARS (D), AND ANGLED DOWNWARD HOLDING THE KNIVES (E) PROPERLY INSIDE THE CUTTERHEAD SLOTS. TURN KNIFE LOCKING SCREWS, ONE OF WHICH IS SHOWN AT (C), COUNTERCLOCKWISE JUST ENOUGH TO HOLD BOTH KNIVES (E) IN THE CUTTERHEAD (F).

9. Adjust both knives (see manual).

It sounds like the keypad is shorting.

Glad you unplug it, since it can be very dangerous.

Since it's less than one year old, it should be fully covered under warranty. I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer to get it fixed free.

Dryer vanes came loose... can't figure out how to remove front or top panel to access the outside of the drum in order to tighten the bolts/screws that hold the vane in place.

use a putty knife and about 4 inches inside on each side insert the putty knife between the frount panel and the top and lift up on both sides, the tub will be visable to the screw holes in the tub to reinstall the vanes
