Question about Raymarine Raystar 125 GPS Receiver

Open Question

We have a C80 Raymarine Helm and a Raystar 125 GPS receiver. the GPS receiver is flashing green. However, our C80 is not obtaining a GPS fix. Where do we start to determine the correction needed?

We have had electricians on board to test the wiring and no issues have been identified i.e. sufficient power is noted at connection points. The trigger event was we had contracted the installation of a new VHF/AIS radio ...after install we had no fix showing up on C80 and no fix on the new radio.

SOURCE: ear Sirs, I have problem to

Hi Arne,

What I understand is you might not have gone through the user manual for C70 as its clearly mentioned about the settings. Once when you have it set up correct then we can come to troubleshooting mode whether something is wron or not.

I would therefore request you to take out some time and go through the manual first and then try connecting or setting it up.

SOURCE: GPS antenna

If your old antena is a Seatalk or NMEA antena you can use it for your C80
If you GPS antenna is older than five year change it.

SOURCE: wiring of seatalk instruments

OK, you are confused. Seatalk is a bus system, using 3 wires , (power +, power-, and Data.) red, bare and yellow repectively. So Red and Bare are 12V and ground. Since the 125 shows a green light, it is getting power and outputting data. but is it seatalk?? to make a 125 Seatalk, you must hook red and green together to 12 V, so check that first. if green is grounded or not connected, that is the problem (or one of them)
Next divide system to its' simplest terms, so hook the GPS straight to the display ST60, and see if it works red to rd, yell to yell and bare to bare (sometimes black) One by one hook the others into the chain until they all work or failed device takes down Seatalk network. If you are missing 12V on a seatalk leg, check 5A fuse in course computer. If you have a pilot, you have a course computer, unless it is ST4000 wheel pilot, and then the brain is the display (course computer is built in to ST4000 display)

SOURCE: RAYMARINE C80 SEATALK CABLE INSTALLATION

The Raymarine RS125 has five wires and can be either seatalk or nmea. It would be best to get a dealer involved. If things are hooked up wrong you'll fry your equipment.

What is the connection path from Garmin 72 to raymarine c80, using NMEA 1083

I'm taking this as you want to send the gps information to your C80 not receive from the C80? If this is the case the brown wire on the garmin is the nmea data out +. The Black wire is considered nmea out neg (-) of the garmin. So hook the garmin brown to the white on the raymarine. Hook the black from the garmin to the green on the raymarine. That means you are outputting lat/long info to the raymarine from the garmin.

My Raystar 120 GPS keeps losing its fix.... the fix comes b ack a few minutes later, but then i lose it again. I have tried a cold restart, but the problem persists. Ideas?

Guys, most likely the litium battery is eol. Buy a new litium 3 volts battery for 3-4 euro's with soldering points . Use a pair of scissors, note the plus and minus side of the poles and carefully cut out the battery leaving enough metal to solder a replacement battery. Solder the replacement battery, and the problem is fixed. You're ready for another 6 years of fun saving 300 USD for a new GPS!

Raymarine looses GPS fix

A software upgrade will do a world of good for the unit, however it may not take care of your GPS fix issue. Usually when you have satellites showing and no fix, that indicates a bad antenna. Check the LED indicator on the antenna, it should be green. The RS125 has a connector plug on the antenna end so it is nice and easy to buy a new one and give it a try. The software is free and a good start.....and yes you need to do a reset after the upgrade by holding the first soft key as you power on the unit. It will give you a factory reset countdown. Simply hold that soft key until it is done and begins the reboot.

I bought a C80 Raymarine Plotter this has a NMEA pigtail with Brown, Screen, Yellow, Green And White wires I haave also bought a RS 125 Receiver this has a pigtail lead with Red , Green, Yellow, Brown and...

If you have a Raymarine pilot it makes sence to wire it all up to Seatalk. Wire as follows Red to red , silver to silver, yellow to yellow, brown(on rs125) to silver on seatalk buss Green (on rs125) to red on seatalk buss. The above is for the conection between RS125 and C80.
To hook the pilot to system you just need to hook the seatalk lines (red, yellow, silver) from the pilot to the conection with the RS125 and the seatalk cable to the C80.(Color for color). The sea talk connection for your pilot can be picked up from you course computer they are labeld and colored on the unit.
If you are not running a course computer as in the case with the older wheel and tiller pilots you will need to take a sea talk cable and cut it. Once it is cut you will see the red yellow and silver wires and you can tap into there . Remember to connect the cable back together were you cut it. Hope this helps

GPS antenna

If it is an RS 120 or an RS112 antenna you do not need to change it.These are both active antennas in other words they do all the gps computing in the unit itself. You need to look at the wire from the antenna. If it is a coax cable(2 wire) it will not work.If it is 3 or 4 wires it will work. If 3 wire (red ,silver yellow) just hook up color for color. If 4 wire you are going to have to figure out the wiring for it from the units wiring diagram. That could be a big enough pain that you might be inclined to change to the new antenna. If you wire the new RS125 antenna you must wire it to the seatalk buss. The seatalk wires are Red Silver and Yellow. The wire from the RS125 are red yellow silver green and brown.Wire as follow to your sea talk cable.Yellow to Yellow, red to red , silver to silver, green to red, brown to silver.
Hope this helps.
