To recover the date if the unit does not power on anymore. pull the drives out and connect them directly to the PC.

what could of cause this? back HD sectors. bad enclose. over heating.

hum.. i had that feeling it was a raid setup. there's some Raid utility that can rebuild it from what some of my friends tell me. but 98% most of the time in a raid setup, i'm assuming it's a raid 0 then all data is lost. sorry.

Sounds like the drive has croaked. You can get the data but expect to spend upwards of $1000 or more to a data recovery company.

Every time i plug my 1TB western digital mybook in my computer freezes and when i shut it down it wont restart until i unplug it from the computer i have no idea what it could be please help

That needs a motherboard drivers upgrade.

What happens is that the BIOS starts detecting and checking booting devices.

Earlier motherboards are not able to detect external hard drives and boot from them.

So the solution to this is to turn off the computer and then disconnect the cable.

Remove safely the HD and then restart.

God Bless You!

After improper shut down, my Western Digital 1T firewire hard drive is no longer recognized

Ouch. It might have crash, sorry about that. On that big of the drive, if it doesn't shut down right, it can ruin it very easy. When you shut down properly it parks the head, and when it doesn't the head doesn't get park, and it tryies. When that happens it will crash the drive. I would try to do some diagnostics to it and check and I hope I am wrong, but it doesn't sound good at all.

My computer fails to identify my WD 1tb external hard drive when I plug it in the USB. It also does not show up on Disk Manager. However, it still lights up and I hear it turning. How can I get the...

I fixed that problem with a WDC My Book Home 1TB in Windows 7:

The drive was recognized in computer management and in device manager but no drive letter was allocated while connected with a e-sata cable.

1.in computer management > storage > disk management
2.rightclick drive 1 or wathever the number of the WDC drive (which should be basic at this time)
3.select 'convert to dynamic disk'
4.drive should get a drive letter
5.format (warning: all data get lost, but you can download original software from wdc.com)

Succes!

Western Digital 1T MyBook keeps crashing

it seems a problem with the driver, try plugging it onto a different computer. If that works, reinstall the driver.

Western Digital My Book Pro - Replace Disks

Same problem. This from WD Answer ID 1664:
Important: The user serviceable enclosure will only work with replacement hard drives from Western Digital. Inserting a non-Western Digital hard drive into the enclosure could cause damage or data loss.
So Hitachi drives will not work at all. After talking to tech support, it seems you have to have them send you a replacement disk in order for it to work.
I'm looking for a way around this since I want to upgrade my dual 500 G drives with dual 1 TB drives also. Maybe they throw something onto the boot sector that tells the MyBook controller what to do, who knows? The search goes on.

My WD 1T MYBOOK

Oh boy , mac , well for starters if the drive was formated on a PC , the mac may not recognise it at all.

namely because mac partition and PC partition are two different critters.

the only method I know of to get a MAC drive partitioned and formated for a mac is use FreeBSD tools.

I can hear my fellow geeks laughing and mocking me in the background for my lack of knowledge on this one , but hey at least it gets you one step farther than you were before.

i've got the same problem, but what i am going to try is to get another sata enclosure, put it and see if it works....
some other posts online said that Western Digitals components suck and therefore the mechanism for powering up the drive easily gives up......
firstly try removing the drive from the enclosure and go get a $30 enclosure with a SATA connection....this should do the trick, if not than save up some serious cash for Professional Data Recovery guy's...it ain't cheappp !
i'll keep you posted on if it works out for me !
