Steaming baskets (made from either metal or bamboo) are set on top of a pot of boiling water. The steam from the water enough cooks the vegetables without taking out all the nutrients. Steaming machines are available too.

Steaming vegetables how do I...

Couldn't be simpler. Prepare your vegetables as normal ensuring root vegetables are cut into similar sized pieces and in a multilayer steamer the root vegetables will be in the lower section and the leaf vegetables in the upper sections with the fastest cooking at the top.

Depending how you like your veg cooked will depend on the cooking times. My wife boils the potatoes for a while before placing the steamer on top so all finish together - not a particularly scientific approach, just the result of experience...

How to Steam Vegetables in your Rice Cooker

One of the extra benefits of having a Rice Cooker is that you can also use it very effectively as a steamer for your vegetables. It is very simple to do and also works very well.

To use your rice cooker as a steamer you will need to use the steamer basket that came with your rice cooker. That is what the metal thing with all the holes in it is for.

First place couple of cups of water in the bottom of the cooker pan... yes you still need to place the pan in the cooker... do not place water in the cooker without the bottom pan in place! Then place that metal basket on the top of the bottom pan and place your veggies in there. They can be either frozen, fresh, or thawed, it does not matter, but may affect your cooking times.

Then comes the good part....you get to season your veggies with whatever it is that will make them taste even better! Salt, Pepper, and even a Teriyaki sauce will work well... but you can spice them up with minced onion, parsley, garlic powder or anything else you might think sounds good.

Then just place the lid on the top of the basket and turn the rice cooker on by pressing the cook or steam button. The cooker will heat up to produce steam. When the vegetables begin to soften, check them and turn off the cooker when they get to the softness that you desire. Do not over cook them as you will loose the flavor, and nutrients, that you are trying to preserve by using the steamer.

Once the veggies are done, some people enjoy melting butter, margarine, or other similar things on them to give them even more flavor.

Most of all enjoy those great veggies!!!
How much water goes in the steamer? Not the rice bowl.

Good afternoon to you!
If I remember correctly, from my rice cooker days, then the measurements are inside the bowl.
Mine was hard to see but I saw them . The measurement was in cups.

On a 1000 watt oven, I find 7min about right for most vegetables. Those which need more cooking may require 10min or more.

Any advice for how to cut vegetables that you are going to steam?

Cut the bigger vegetables into uniform size pieces. Leave smaller vegetables whole. And experiment - everyone has a different opinion as to how they like their vegetables cooked, so try it a few different ways until you know how many minutes to set your steamer for.

What is the advantage of steaming your vegetables in a steaming basket?

Steaming is one of the healthiest cooking techniques around. It's also a quick-and-easy way to cook up dinner veggies (especially for my family of 5). Here are some of the best vegetables to steam and tips for keeping them nice and crisp.
The Benefits of Steaming-
You may have heard this before: steaming is one of the best ways to cook veggies so they keep their nutrients. Vitamins are easily destroyed when you cook with water for long periods of time (i.e. boiling), but steaming uses the steam from boiling water to cook your food -- not the water directly.
Another advantage of steaming is no added fat or sodium (do you dab butter in a boiling pot of broccoli or load in the salt?). Any veggie you steam will be around 25 calories per half-cup and chock-full of vitamins and minerals.
