Question about SimpleTech 250GB USB2.0 7200 RPM External 250 GB IDE Hard Drive

1 Answer

SimpleTech 250 GB external drive

I am sick, sick and up all night worrying! I have been using this over a year now with notebook computer and USB hub with absolutely no problems. Just did a full backup of computer of all pictures, music, documents, etc., and about 100 GB left. Not sure if pulled USB while connected and on, but now computer does not recognize at all. Blue light comes on at first turn on, but doesn't go around and around like before, then flashing red light, then nothing. From posts, I probably have warranty, but am ONLY concerned with retrieving my data! I have taken apart and just tried to make sure everything looked secure, but still doesn't help. Tried on two other computers and switching out USB. The little board where the power plug and the USB go in has been unplugged and plugged back into the drive. Please help - is there a way to connect the drive directly to computer without that little board? Or could that part be bad?

I truly only wish to somehow recover the data even if I never use this again! Thanks for any help!!

There could be several reasons,
1, HDD could be having a issue
2. The USB Converter could be having an issue
3. the USB cable can be having an issue.

Here is the somethings that you can try.
1. If possible borrow a external Enclosure from a friend & try the HDD out. if it works then you have a issue with the USB Convector or the cable. if its still the same then you HDD has a issue. if thats the case you will have no choice but to take it to a computer shop & ask if they can back it up for you.

When turn on my simpletech 250GB device its say one of my usb devices has malfunctioned and windows can not recognize it.

This sounds like your USB bus does not have enough power available to run all devices that are connected to it.
If you are using a USB HUB, this is not unusual.
Try disconnecting other USB devices to see whether that allows the external drive to function properly. If it does, then I suggest that you get a "powered" USB hub to use to connect all of your devices.

My SimpleTech 250 gb external hard drive has changed from being

The reason for drive letters changing is often as simple as having two plugged in at the same time. Changing them again is simple but should be done while all drives are plugged in simultaniously.

So, plug in both usb drives, then right-click on My Computer and select Manage, when the management console opens select disk management. Strating with the other USB drive, select it on the right hand side and then right-click it and select "Change drive letters and paths". Select change from the next window and select a high letter X/Y/Z from the drop down box. Then click ok.

Repeat the last few steps with the external harddrive and select E, when you're done you should have to restart to allow the changes to take place but then it will be set in. You will have to repeat this process if you change which USB port you use for the hub or if you add other additional external drives.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Simpletech 500 GB external hard drive - unresponsive

If you really can not get it to work anymore, you could try opening it up and connecting the hdd directly on a IDE/SATA port in your computer. This will only work if you have a desktop, for a laptop you would need all kinds of converters.

Transfering data

If you are having issues accessing the drive i've encountered that situation before

I tried a different cord and it started working again. Additionally i've had this work for me (see below)

Try This:

  1. Unplug all USB devices
  2. Turn off Ext Hard drive
  3. Shut down computer
  4. Power on ext hard drive (then wait like 1 min)
  5. Turn on computer
  6. Wait for windows to finish loading
  7. Plug in the USB cord from the ext hard drive to your computer (may take up to a minute for computer to recognize it)
  8. If it doesn't recognize it then keep trying it in different USB ports
If it still won't recognize get all the latest windows update and reboot. If that doesn't solve your issue try your external hard drive on some other computers, check to see if drive needs special drivers installed (which most don't).

From SimpleTech's website: "1) I have the drive plugged in but I cannot find the drive in "My Computer", why?
The most likely cause would be not enough power provided by a single USB port on your computer. Unplug the portable drive from the cable and unplug the cable from the computer. Now, plug the cable into 2 USB ports directly on your computer. (If you have a desktop, you should plug the USB cable directly into the USB ports on the back of the computer. If this is a laptop, you should plug directly into a USB ports on the computer. Do not plug into a USB hub or docking station). Then plug the drive into the cable. In a few seconds you should see the drive listed in the "My Computer" window as a SimpleDrivePS."

If all that fails you need to RMA (Return to Manufacturer) your external hard drive. Most hard drives have a pretty decent warranty on them. Your simpletech 250GB has a 3 year warranty on it. Info on the warranty can be found at If you want to RMA it, click the "Technical Support / RMA Request" on the left hand side of that page.
