Natural flu remedies are needed now more than ever with the increasing spread of seasonal flu viruses.
Influenza or "the flu" is viral in nature. It affects the respiratory tract including the nose, throat, lungs, and other air passages. It is often confused with the common cold but the flu is more serious.
Symptoms of flu include coughing, sore throat, muscle ache, headache, fatigue, and these are accompanied by a high fever.

You can have a really bad head cold and feel rotten but it's still not the flu. The symptoms of the flu are similar in many ways to a cold but usually just a lot worse. Especially the fever, body aches which are more intense with flu than a common cold.

I have been coughing for a few days and how do I get rid of it

A persistent cough is usually not suggestive of a really serious problem, but sometimes it is caused by something needing immediate attention.

I'd first see a pharmacist and ask for a cough suppressant. Explain whether it is a dry cough or a phlegmmy cough, and whether you have had a fever, or any aches and pains.

Then if it does not improve in a few days more, see a doctor, who will listen to your chest.

If you are or were a smoker it may be advisable to skip the pharmacist and see a doctor soon if possible. I hope you can access good medical care, as so many can't.

How do I know that this years flu vaccine is correct

the vials are clearly labeled. If you take the vaccine, you will get this year's cure. Ask to read the label if you don't trust your heathcare professional.

What does it mean if you are coughing up blood? Is it dangerous?

Coughing up blood can be a sign of a serious medical condition and you should get a doctor's opinion immediately. It's officially called Hemoptysis and can be caused by a lot of different issues, so you need to consult with a medical professional who can do blood tests, xray etc to find the cause.

My husband has flu and my friend told me that he has to drink a lot. Does that really help?

Yes, your husband should stay well hydrated and drink at least 8 cups of water a day. The water helps to thin down mucus which has the potential to hang around and turn into a respiratory infection. Hot drinks also have the added benefit of being soothing for sore throats etc.

Avoid caffeine filled drinks as they can cause dehydration.

Does anyone know any good home remedies for flu?

Fill your bowl or a sink with steaming water, add a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil and put your head over the bowl with a towel over your head to keep the steam in and breathe deeply.

Make sure you drink a lot as well and try using saline sprays to thin the mucus in your nose and to add moisture to dry membranes.

How does the flu shot actually work?

The flu shot causes anti bodies to develop in your body that then protect you against infection from the flu virus. It takes about 2 weeks for the vaccine to work and whilst it can cause fatigue and muscle aches, it can't 'give you' the flu.

When is the best time of year to get a flu shot?

There is a flu season that runs approximately from October through to May. It doesn't mean you can't get it at other times of the year, but this is 'the season' where a lot of people suffer and infect each other. So it's probably best to have it done around September.
