Question about Crafts & Hobbies

I bought some beautiful beads for making necklaces etc but some of the holes are just a bit too small for the thread. Is there anything I can do? It seems such a waste not to use them.

Do you have a bead reamer? If you bought a starters jewelry making kit, you might have got one with it. If not, you can buy one for quite a good price. Bead reamers are good for smoothing down rough edges on beads but can also help to enlarge holes on beads.

How to Make Your Own Jewelry

It's actually a lot easier than you realize to make your own jewelry and it's certainly a lot cheaper.
If you are even slightly creative and enjoying crafts, then jewelry making could be a great hobby that you do for yourself and for family and friends.
I've made necklaces and bracelets to match outfits for special occasions for myself and also for my closest friends. It's actually a really personal way to give a gift.

Here are some basic tips:
  • If you see a piece of jewelry that you like, try and either take a photo or draw a picture of it, so you can base your design around it later. (I didn't say copy it exactly).
  • Find a good place to source your materials. There are some great bead and jewelry shops tucked away that sale a wide range of beads and thread materials to choose from. Even though some of the fancier beads can still work out to be expensive, it's still a fraction of the price of buying it ready made.
  • You don't need to invest in a lot of jewelry making equipment but you will need wire to thread on to and clasps for closing.
  • Ask in the jewelry shops for advice about basic tools to get you started.
  • Most importantly - have fun. Play around with colors and textures and be adventurous. You can always undo necklaces and re-use the beads somewhere else.

I want to make a necklace for my sons wedding with pearls but they are so small and delicate I am not sure what thread will work with it?

Pearls often have very small holes. You need to use a natural silk thread or another very fine thread. It really depends if you plan to knot between pearls, if so that will affect your choice of thread, so make sure you get advice from a beading expert before you buy.

I bought gimp wire as I was told it gives a neater finish to jewelry when you make it yourself. But I am not sure how to actually use it. Any advice?

When you finish threading the beads onto your necklace, bracelet etc, add a crimp to the wire. Now put a small bit of gimp wire onto the thread. Thread this through the clasp loop and then back through the crimp. Now use pliers to squeeze it firmly together with pliers.

I have just started making my own jewelry using beads. How do I stop the beads wearing against the thread?

If you are using beads with rough edges, it's more likely to wear the thread away. You can buy a bead reamer which is tool used to smooth down edges around the holes of the bead.
