Can you give me some examples of condiments? My dietician said I can use them to add flavor to my food . What does she mean?

Your dietician is right. Some condiments are low in fat and calories and really help to brighten up a plate of healthy food. Just be careful as some condiments contain a lot of oil or sugar.

Here are some example of condiments:

- Relish, Ketchup, Chili sauce, mint sauce, horseradish, chutney, mustard, soy sauce, wasabi, salsa.

What kinds of condiment dispensers are there?


There is the most common one, with the pump, where you push down the pump and the condiment comes out.
Then there are the chilled dispensers, where the condiments are set in little containers that can be put in a refrigerated structure. These are very common in fast foods, frozen yogurt stores or ice cream stores.
There are the classic and simple plastic trays with compartments, for picnics.
And then there are the fast food classics: the squeeze plastic bottle ones.

Can you cook chicken with mustard?


Yes. You can do a lot with mustard and chicken but the most well known combination is a honey, mustard and chicken combination.

Can you use ketchup in recipes? I seem to have a couple of bottles in my cupboard and want to use them up before they go out of date.


You can try making your own baked beans with excess ketchup. You need to look up a recipe but it basically involves beans, ketchup, dark brown sugar, onions and tomato juice.

Another idea is sloppy joes - this is basically cooking ground beef in a liquid that is mostly ketchup based.

Finally you could make a big batch of bar b q sauce and then freeze it in portions.

I would really like to try making my own ketchup. I just think we spend so much money buying ketchup every few weeks and it might be worth trying to make it ourselves. Any recipes?


I think it's a great idea to make your own ketchup. We do it sometimes and the adults definitely prefer the taste of it to the shop bought stuff. The kids are taking a bit longer to enjoy the flavor but I wont' give up.

Is ketchup actually good for you? This is an argument that we have been having in our family for years and no one can agree.


This question depends who you ask because there are aspects of ketchup that are both positive and negative:

The pros:

Ketchup is a low calorie sauce compared to some other condiments. It contains tomatoes which are cooked. They are thought to contain an anti oxidant which could help lower the risk of heart disease.

The cons:

Ketchup contains both salt and sugar as some of its main ingredients and if you use quite a lot of ketchup with your food it can be unhealthy.

In addition, many companies now add corn syrup and flavorings to the recipe.

In summary - ketchup is delicious and certainly not bad for you like some foods but eat it in moderation.

What is wasabi? When I order sushi, they ask if I want wasabi. Should I try it?


Wasabi is a condiment that is in the horseradish and mustard family. It comes from a plant that grows in the river valleys in japan. It's very strong and hot and can be felt in the nasal passages.

It's really tasty with sushi but try it in small amounts until you are sure how well you tolerate it.

What is hoisin sauce? How do you use it?


Hoisin sauce is a Chinese sauce that is quite thick and sweet and is used to flavor dishes such as noodles, beef and stir fries. It's salty and sweet and can really add character to a dish but not everybody likes it as it's very strong.

What are condiments?
