Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I wanted to add my anti virus via cd to my HP laptop. However, when I closed the DVD tray the cd was not recognised. When I opened the DVD drive, I noticed that the cd would not stay fixed to the little circular wheel. Can anyone help? Many Thanks in advance.

The little circular wheel should have several tiny springs around this wheel that hold the CD to this wheel. When you press the CD onto this wheel the CD should lock onto this wheel.
If it does not lock onto the CD then these holding springs maybe missing or broken and this DVD drive needs replacing.

    The holding springs are there but they don't appear to lock the cd into place. So the whole DVD drive needs replaced? If so, any ideas how much that is likely to cost?

    I suggest you Google the Internet for a DVD drive for your model HP laptop. You will get an idea of the prices from the various suppliers.

SOURCE: cd/dvd drive won't stay shut

I have the dv9000z. If I do NOT push the DVD drive tray all the way in until it CLICKS shut, then it OPENS again after 1-2 seconds. This is normal. I have found that most times when I close the DVD tray drive, I am not pushing it in far enough, because the top of the DVD tray is rubbing against the laptop's case. If I just press down VERY SLIGHTLY and push the DVD tray in, the tray will fully close and CLICK shut. This works for me. Good luck.

go into my computer, control panel, device manager. find the cd rom in your list of devices uninstall the cd rom and reboot your computer. when your computer restarts it will find your cd rom first thing and reinstall it automatically. this should clear up any issues you have. if not < you may have a virus, IRQ conflict, or bad cd drive.

SOURCE: cd/dvd rom not working on hp laptop

Is the Drive detected in the BIOS? Can you boot from your Windows or any bootable disc? If so try this solution:

Always backup your registry before editing and use care to find exact key!
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.

You can check the BIOS to see if the drive is recognized and even attempt to boot from the drive using a bootable CD to verify it is functional (if using the Windows disc - just verify it reads - DO NOT REINSTALL)

If the drive works use the following to get the drive back in Windows:

Always backup your registry before editing and use care to find exact key!
Start Registry Editor (Start, Run and type in regedit then click)

Find "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" (and "UpperFilters.bak" "LowerFilters.bak", if they exist) value under the following key in the registry, and delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Quit Registry Editor.

Reboot.

NOTE: You might need to reinstall any CD recording apps you have, if they start to not work completely, after doing this.

Cd tray wont open

CD/DVD Drive Tray problems
There are two ways to open the CD/DVD drive door if the button just below the drive tray does not work.
Go to My Computer and right click on the drive and click on Eject.
If this does not work then you can manually open the CD/DVD drive tray by -
Straighten a paper clip and gently insert it into a tiny hole below the drive tray next to the Eject button. Push the paper clip gently until the drive tray pops out, then pull the tray until it is fully out, then you can remove the CD/DVD disc.
If you still having problem opening with the Eject button, then the CD/DVD drive is faulty and needs replacing.

MY CD TRAYS WILL NOT OPEN ON MY HP PAVILIAN A1737C AND THE BUTTONS WILL NOT PUSH IN. PLEASE HELP

Try this:
Start>Computer>Right click on CD ROM drive> eject.

If you do not have a CD ROM drive in Computer (Vista & Windows 7) or (My Computer in XP)

Try This:

1) Close all open programs
2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter
3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
* SYSTEM
* CurrentControlSet
* Control
* Class
* {4D36E965-E325-11CE-
BFC1-08002BE10318}

4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.

* UpperFilters
* LowerFilters
* UpperFilters.bak
* LowerFilters.bak

5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete
6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor
7) Reboot your computer
8) Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone

Good luck!

I have a HP PC and the DVD CD Rom keeps opening and closing by it self. How can I fix it?

First, with the power off, open the computer case and disconnect the 4-pin power plug from the drive. Then at least the drive won't open and close while you try to figure out what's wrong.

One possibility is that the front panel open/close button on the drive is sticking. Then the drive thinks you're always pressing the button. In that case, replace the drive. New DVD/CD burner drives are only $30 or so, so it isn't worth repairing one. I think you'll probably find the drive is just faulty.

Another possibility is that your computer has a virus. Random drive opening and closing was caused by a virus going around a while ago. I don't remember the virus name, but it was quite a while ago. Still, it's worth checking unless you're absolutely sure you have up-to-date antivirus software and you've been scanning your computer regularly. I would suggest downloading the free version of MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware and doing a complete scan to see if it finds anything. If it does, let it correct the problem.

If it turns out to be a virus problem, don't forget to plug the power connector back into the CD drive when you've cleared the trouble.

Hope this helps, and thanks for using Fixya!

HP DVD 635 - auto tray open

no ghosts, you either have something jammed up inside of the drive which is keeping the door from closing properly all the way or the door itself is defective.

Either way you would be better off replacing the drive with a new dvd-rw cause the drive would be up to date and the problem with the opening door would go away.

Hi,

You can try the steps below and this should fix the issue.

Edit the registry:-
1. Click Start, and click Run.
2. Type regedit in the Open box, and click OK.
3. In Registry Editor, click the plus (+) sign next to each folder name to expand the following registry path:
4. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
5. Under Class, click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
6. In the right pane, right-click Upper Filters, and click Delete.
7. Click yes when prompted to delete the registry value.
8. In the right pane, right-click Lower Filters, and click Delete.
9. Click yes again.
10.Close the window and restart the computer

Please do not forget to rate the solution.

My cd/dvd opens then closes

> I've already replaced it once

Well, I've seen CD-drives that would re-open, when you try to close them -- it is _falsely_ detecting a "jam" as the tray is closing, and then just re-opens the tray, rather than "forcing" itself to close.

Replacing the CD-drive is the only way to fix that type of "false-positive" jam-detection conditions.

But, since you've done that, either you were unlucky-enough that the replacement drive was also "defective", or, you have a computer-virus on your computer that is maliciously issuing commands to the CD to "open-the-tray".
