Hi Adrienne - If it only happens to the one DVD it is most likely a problem with the DVD
being damaged or dirty.
If it's happening with all your DVDs your player laser lens is probably dirty or it might be damaged. If no discs are being read get yourself a CD/DVD cleaning disc and run it a couple of times (following the directions). Of this doesn't work you will have to decide if the player is worth the price of a repair (unless it's still under warranty). Most aren't as you can buy decent players for less than $50. Any repair will cost at least that.
If it is the one disc I suggest you take a clean soft cloth and wet it slightly with plain water and the give it a few strokes across the disc (not in circles), let it try dry for a few minutes and try it again. Also examine the disc (bottom) for any obvious scratches or stuck on gunk.
Did you figure this out? I upgraded firmware from 009 to 011 and am now having the same problem. Have had the unit for 18 months. Called Sony and they want me to ship in for 147.00 dollar repair even though their firmware upgrade caused the problem. Cannot operate disk now when trying to load a Blu-ray disk. Plays standard DSD's without any trouble.....
if your sound system gives you Desk Error or Desk Read Error, try cleaning it with a lens cleaner, they can be found in many forms in the market. If the problem still insists then your system's lens ( the part which read the optical discs like DVD's CDs etc.) need to be checked by a professional technician, probably would install a new lens on your system.
You can comment if you need more clarifications. Best of luck
Is it just that disk or are all the discs not reading?? If it is just that disc try cleaning the disc with a lint free soft towel. Also is the disc a factory dvd or a burnt copy of media. Some dvd players will not play certain re-write discs some play DVD-R and some play DVD+R and some will play both ... good luck
Try a "Laser Lens Cleaner" preferably one that uses fluid, run that thru the machine a couple times. You can find them at just about any retail store that sells CD's/DVD's or electronics. Next, if you have any liquid car polish, take a couple drops and spread on the surface of the disc. Use a microfiber towel to clean off. This helps clean off smudges and protects the disc from scratches. And it works great on damaged discs too! If your discs still do not play, then the unit needs to be repaired or replaced. Hope this helps
Suddenly had this problem. My Phillips is hooked up to TV and to Cable Box. When I inserted a DVD it would return a "no disc" but it would read and play CDs. After a call to Phillips...who said that they had no idea what was going on and I should take it in for service...it was 4 months out of warranty. Repair company said it was not worth the repair costs ($200) so I should try cleaning the lens with a lens cleaning disc. I bought a Maxell. It has a set of little brushes on the bottom of the disc. I inserted it and played track 2 for 20 seconds as instructed and voila! It began reading the DVDs again. I was only out the $10 for the disc cleaner. If you have this problem, try the disc cleaner first as it might be the fix.
Given how close to the warranty termination the problem occurred, I would call Sony and request warranty service. You should speak to a supervisor who will have the power to grant that concession. If that fails, open up the unit and clean the lens using a cotton swab and alcohol. That may resolve it. Otherwise, the optics assembly will need to be replaced. I think that model uses a KHS-240. I can look that up if it comes to that though.
Keep us posted.
Did you try cleaning the lens yet??? If the lens is not dirty and you have no electronic equipment like an osciliscope, and test alighnment disc theres not alot a consumer can repair on these units. Sorry. Good Luck
