Question about Brother HL-2170W Laser Printer
I just realized what my problem was with this same situation..."Off line". Do the following:
1. Reset the printer to factory default settings: turn off, turn on holding down blue button; after all LEDs light-up release button; All LEDs with go out then flash once.
2. Hook up the printer to an open port on your wireless HUB.
3. Install Brother software (note: go to programs/brother HL-2170 and select remove software prior to reinstalling)
4. Here is the catch: MAKE sure to select the correct encryption code. I was selecting TKIP instead of AES and two things happened...1) the computer did not pick up the printer on the network scan, and 2) the printer will remain off-line.
Once i selected AES, the computer found the printer on the network and viola' no more problems.
I then added my wireless laptop: installed drivers only, the programs scanned and found the printer on the wireless network and that was it. Now both computers are wireless!
HOPE THIS HELPS!!!

On Windows XP the solution is as follows. Do the install per directions using the network cable method. Install BRAdmin light off the setup disk. ( password=access)Then, get into Printers And Faxes via the the Start->Settings method and DELETE the printer then (you will need the IP address of the printer, it will be something like 192.168.2.3)
For Windows® 2000/XP and Windows Server® 2003 8
In Printers.& FAXES
Click Add a printer to start the Add Printer Wizard.
For Windows® 2000: Double click the Add Printer icon to start the Add Printer Wizard.
c Click Next when you see the Welcome to the Add Printer Wizard screen.
d Select Local printer and deselect the Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer
option, then click Next.
e You must now select the correct Network printing port. Select Create a new port and select
Standard TCP/IP Port from the pull-down window, then click Next.
f The Add Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard will now appear. Click Next.
g Enter the IP address, or the node name you wish to configure. The Wizard will automatically enter the
Port name information for you, then click Next.
h Windows® 2000/XP and Windows Server® 2003 will now contact the printer that you specified. If you did
not specify the correct IP address or name then an error dialog will appear.
i Click Finish to complete the Wizard.

Is this the initial install? If so do this..
I finally figured this out. Do the "cable" install. After it discovers the printer etc you will get to a screen during the driver part of the install that will ask you how to find the printer. The "recommended" list method is a deadend! Instead, check the IP address option and input that.. You can get the IP address of the printer from the test page which should have already printed.(Its probably 192.168.2.3). I run XP and it solved the problem. I suspect its also the answer for Macs and Vista as well.
I have also had success by doing the "cable" install, then when its done, deleting the printer in Printers and Faxes, then doing a manual install (you still need the IP address). I am using two computers to go to this printer and it flies. Great speed.

I assume it's turned on and connected to the router.
Sometimes with DHCP, the IP address on the printer will change. I end up going into the router table to see what IP addresses are assigned where. Invariably I'll find my network printer has changed. Find the printer and write it down.
In Windows, Go into Printers> choose the Brother and right click to check Properties. Look for Ports and change the IP address as needed. It will come back online.

reve the toner and drum from the machine, seperate the and put the toner aside. slide the tab back and forth about 20 times then blow in the slot. if you need to you can wipe the roller with a clean dry cloth.

Open the front cover of Printer, remove the drum and toner with force and put aside. Remove the jammed paper slowly so it doesnt rip. If you cannot find the jammed paper check in the back cover and paper tray.
