Remove the two covers one high and one low and set the temp higher. This time of year with colder water comming in the house the water heater has to work harder to raise the temp of the incomming water. In the summer the incommong water is much warmer. 40 gal is a small water heater and you will only get about 15 gal of hot water with the ice cold water entering the water heater as you use the hot water. You can get a bigger water heater. even better is to go tankless and a have never ending hot water and save money at the same time.

SOURCE: My electric reliance water heater is making a constant noise

it might be hard water in the heater. the hard water flakes and when your water heater turns on it creates some movement in those hard water flakes and makes a popping and hissing noise then when it comes to temperature it should stop. the temperature and pressure relief valve shouldn't make this noise. but if you stick your finger in the pipe and it is wet then you might have problems some where else. let me know if it is

Electric water heater is fully repairable by homeowner.
Following information will tell you how.

1) Background on your heater:
Reliance is AO Smith company.
http://www.aosmith.com/OperatingUnits/Detail.aspx?id=138&ekmensel=c580fa7b_12_0_138_3

Age of water heater is shown in serial number. First character is letter. Second 2 characters are numbers, which are year of manufacture. For example 05 is year 2005.

The 501 manual is not shown on Reliance website:
http://www.reliancewaterheaters.com/prod/elec.html

2) Two things known for sure:
- electricity is OK
- upper element is working because there is some hot water.

3) Three things can cause problem you describe:
- Loose wire located from upper thermostat to lower element and thermostat.
- Upper or lower thermostat is bad
- Lower element is burned out

4) How to troubleshoot and repair
- Turn off power, open covers and look for loose and burned wiring, especially on lower element.
- When finished, put back insulation and covers so thermostat not exposed to cooler temperatures.
- Burned wire on lower element is evidence that lower element is burned out.

- If you do not want to follow testing steps below, next step is to replace both upper and lower thermostat for about 25$ and see if problem persists.
- If problem persists, replace lower element.

Reliance 606 Hot water Heating element (Pilot light) won't stay lit

Gas water heaters don't have elements, so I am confused about what type water heater you have..
Look on the side of tank for the label.
Find the brand, and type. Does it show BTUs? Or does it show wattage?
Then re-post question with this information, for best possible answer.
Also post question on Tank forum.

You have 2 problems with several possible causes:
You have 10-year-old electric water heater that was reinstalled after falling down, and doesn't heat the water.
And you have no hot or cold water pressure, and no pipes are leaking.

1) First problem is lack of water pressure throughout house.
Turn on outdoor spigot nearest to water meter.
This spigot will tell you if problem is inside the house or between the house and meter.
If spigot runs full force, then you probably have clogged pipe where water heater connects to main cold line, or the main shut off valve got clogged with sediment that broke off inside the pipe when you were working on water heater.
Open and close shut off valve to see if that helps. Then disassemble pipes and track back the problem. Put pressure gauge on water heater drain valve to watch pressure drop when turning on indoor faucet.
Read following information:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Low-hot-water-pressure.html

Water heater doesn't work:
Test across wires at top of heater to see if you are getting correct voltage:
If tank is receiving correct voltage, then no hot water puts suspicion on upper element or upper thermostat, or both.

Water heater appears to override thermostats. Water gets scalding hot. This has happened twice. First time I replaced both thermostats. Set both at 120degrees. Model 640DORS Sereal# CO5A035030Thank you

1) There is a water heater condition called 'stacking'
http://waterheatertimer.org/Stacking.html

2) Dual element tanks are 240Volt.
Thermostats turn off 1 leg of 240Volt circuit.
If element is shorted to ground through center of element, it might not trip the breaker.
In this case, the bad element would continue heating with 120V through ground wire.

Remove access door usually on upper side of unit. Will need to unscrew retaining screws. Under cover is a thermostat that you can adjust to your liking. Reattach cover when done.

more than likely tripped the high temp switch. This is made as part of the upper thermostat, replace the thermostat and it should start making hot water.
