If the toner cartridge comes from a reputable source, there should not be any problem. I have used compatible cartridges for years

Hey, Tom - can you recommend any more specific "off brand" names that you've had good results with? Any that you have had poor results with?

Try resetting the toner counter manually;  * Turn off the printer and open the front cover * Press and hold the Go-button down * Turn on the machine while still holding button down, when all three LEDs are lit, release Go-button * Press the Go-button twice, and all three LEDs should be lit again. * Press the Go-button five times (six times if you have the High Yield toner) * Close the front cover and the toner counter should be resetted.

The following worked on the 3 of our HL 5250DN printers that stopped printing for no apparent reason with both the status and toner lights on:

1: Turn off power and remove toner/drum
2: Tape the little spring loaded lever just inside the printer on the upper left hand side in the *DOWN* position! Do not replace drum yet and...
3: Turn power on to printer and let it cycle. Status/Toner lights will come on as usual.
4: Turn off printer, remove tape from lever, replace drum and turn back on.

After hours of working on one of the printers, virtually taking the entire thing apart and replacing fusers, toners and drums, I accidently stumbled onto this sequence. When I tried it on the other 2 printers, Voila! Took like 1 minute each. It must cause some kind of reset of the toner detection switch.

SOURCE: I have a brother DCP-7020, I recently changed the

There seems to be a semi-magic routine to reset the toner counter on the DCP 7020. It is, I quote,

"Open the front cover.
Press options button.
Press the start button.
Press + or up arrow button 10 times.
Press set button.".

This ought to be done with a "pause" of 2-3 seconds (between keys, I'd think) to avoid the system resetting and having to start over.

Hello,

Open door
press Clear/Back key
press *00
press OK

Do not choose anything for drum replacement. when drum replacement menu comes up, just press the * and then 00, then just press OK.

that should clear the error message, the printer has a toner life counter that needs to be reset.

if you need to replace the printer, i would suggest to buy compatible toner, you will save some money doing this. the technology for compatible toner has improved greatly in recent years, you should have no problem using it. i usually buy my ink toner from this website:
Brother Toners Inks Cartridges or
Amazon com Online Shopping for Electronics Apparel Computers Books DVDs... if they have something with prime. Watch this video
it might help you print with empty cartridge :)

It's much cheaper from the servicing dealer, and it's not a "compatible" fake toner... It's funny how you created this question then answered it yourself.

Are you purchasing actual Brother Replacement Toners or off name brand ones? I have seen Non-Brother toners cause all kinds of issues. If they are brother, put some tape or a sticky over the clear eye on the side, you will get a few hundred more pages out of them. If you know for a fact there is still toner in them, and they are brother toners, just do this to reset the counters on them.

  1. Turn off the Printer
  2. Press and hold the menu button and turn on. Keep holding button until you see maintenance on the display
  3. Press 88. this brings up parts replacement menu.
  4. Press up arrow until you see the part you replaced or want to reset.
  5. Press the OK button
  6. Power off and restart Printer.

I have the Brother HL-4070CDW and I have a TONER LIFE END message and it will not allow me to print anymore. How can I make my printer keep printing until I see visible quality issues?

With the front access door open, press and hold the cancel button. While still holding the down the cancel button, press and hold the reprint button... you should now see the toner reset menu. Why we can't get there from the machine info/reset menu to begin with, well, guess Brother wants to sell you more toner. ;^)

Just refilled a nearly new Brother DR2000 and

Who knows what you did wrong? - maybe nothing. But one of the following is the most likely reason:
- You simply topped up the cartridge with toner without completely emptying the the remaining toner out. There is always toner left-over inside, and different brands don't mix well.
- You used a brand of toner not designed for that cartridge.
- It's simply a crappy compatible brand - I've run across all kinds. All toner IS NOT created equal.

Brother 1440 Printer Black streak - is it Drum or Toner?

perform a halfway test by printing something with a full page of letters or graphics and try and stop the printer before the print actually gets to the fuser but has the toner on it from the toner cartridge, remove carefully as the toner won't be melted into the paper and see if the defect is showing up on there. If it is then its your toner and if not then it's your fuser...hope this helps please leave feedback...
