It is sometimes called 'white' grease because it is white in color. IT MUST BE SAFE FOR USE ON PLASTIC! Petroleum based oil or grease will ruin plastic in a heartbeat.

I have a Bernina Minimatic 807 which has stood idle for some time. It will run for a couple of minutes and then lock solid. I have oiled it, cleaned the shuttle and bobbin areas but it is no better.

........Start by removing the bobbin and bobbin case.
........The old grease is most likely hard.
.........Open the upper and lower areas and clean up all of the grease. Real hard debrees can be removed with carburetor cleaner.
........While turning the hand wheel you can spray this on parts to loosen the grease. Use qtips to remove the debrees.
........Use qtips that have been sprayed with carburetor cleaner to clean the plastic where the dried grease and filth is at. Try not to use carburetor cleaner on the plastic as much as possible.
........When the cleaning is finished use sewing machine oil on all parts that are steel against steel movement. (Not plastic or rubber).
........ For plastic against plastic use lithium or 100 % synthetic oil. These can be used in place of the grease because they don't become hardened due to wear and time.

What type of grease do I use on my elna 305 sewing machine.

NO grease!!! Best option is to pick up sewing machine oil sold by Elna--make sure it is the oil recommended for your model. For a computerized machine, apply only as directed in the owner's manual. Computerized machines usually take a clear, thin oil whereas mechanical machines usually take a thicker, lemon-colored oil. To keep your machine purring, AVOID old or inexpensive sewing machine oil. If it is an older mechanical machine, a drop or two can be applied every place where metal rubs against metal--do NOT oil nylon gears, belts, etc.

Sunbeam Sb 1800. What should I do to oil it?

there is only one place I oil this machine , and that's in the bobbin area , all the parts that move inside there could help with a drop or two of oil ,(not covered) the gears in the lower unit (bottom) should be greased once a year to prevent wear , Not any grease will do , as most car type greases will dissolve plastic gears found in these , use only grease safe for plastics , in fact its such a problem most mfg say not to grease them at all, just let em wear out and replace em

I USED REALLY THICK GREASE TO LUBRICATE MY MACHINE AND THEN IT WAS STORED FOR A FEW YEARS. WHEN I TRIED TO USE IT, THE MOTOR RUNS BUT NO OTHER PARTS (i.e. all parts that are supposed to be working) work. ...

Try using a blow dryer on low heat, with sewing machine placed on old towel or something you won't mind getting messed up as the grease starts to drain off. Gradually increase heat if lowest temp isn't working. BE CAREFUL/ALERT for fire as grease is flammable.

Degreasers are liquid and I wouldn't recommend liquids on any
movable parts due to rust factor if not completed dried. How-ever, if you do use degreasing method, try )lemon) ammonia or window cleaner, something that will evaporate faster than water (most degreasers have to be RINSED off).

Viking 6440, sticks in reverse. Hair dryer on high temp. fixes it until it cools off. How can I clean the old grease out and add new grease, myself? Repair is 425.00 at the shop.

You need to purchase a de-greaser spray to clean out the old grease. Im sorry but Im not an expert at this type of machine, but most of the inner workings are similar to all brands. You need to remove the top to expose the crankshaft device that is inside, and spray with a de-greaser. If you know the area where it sticks try that area first. A common de greaser is actually WD40. It lubricates and de greases, you could try this, if available in your area. You may have to use a lithium based grease for that machine I cannot say for certain. I do however have a link to the Husqvarna help site if that will help.. http://www.husqvarnaviking.com/us/2821_3079.htm

Problem with 40 old Elna Zigzag , V/NV/21, Type: 21cF347986

Um, sounds like the machine has seized from old, dry oil and it is dragging down the motor. Avoid using the machine until the issue is resolved so the motor is not damaged.

Depends what kind of oil & grease your husband used, as it could have complicated matters. Also, if the machine has been neglected for a long time, combining heat in the clean-up/lube process is sometimes very helpful. (Can't tell you the machines I've picked up that have had motor oil and grease applied!!! The old gunk needs to be cleaned out and then the appropriate lube applied.) Most machines do not use grease unless it is white lithium grease--perhaps on cams. Oil needs to be fresh, good quality sewing machine oil. I prefer liquid Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube from the hardware store. Do NOT use WD-40, 3-in-1, cooking oil, motor oil, etc. on your machine!

Wheel on right side that controls the needle up and down is very tight...

You have somehow posted a hedge trimmer question amongst a sewing machine forum, so I would suggest a re-post in a different forum to maximise responses !
