Question about Samsung HLS5086WX/XAA
Tv made a loud popping noise (as if a light bulb blew, also had the smell like something fried) and shut off. All three lights in the front were on. Also made a loud whirring noise afterwords. I waited a few minutes and attempted to turn it back on. No picture but made the whirring noise again so I shut it back off and a few seconds later it auto turned itself back on doing the same thing. So unplugged it. I'm assuming its the color wheel but would like a second opinion? Lamp was replaced only a year or two ago.
When my TV did this in the past it ended up being the color wheel. I had someone replace it and it worked fine. I asked it if had to be calibrated after it is installed and he said no. Also make sure the door switch is pushed down when you install the back bulb door. Sometimes this switch can go bad as well.

my advice is that if the project is getting expensive kindly invest in a new tv. i am nt familiar with that set but you are having a micro processor problem replace it and your tv will work fine as it was before good luck.

SOURCE: heard a pop and now no picture
You are on the right track for the repair of the set.
You should be able to hear the color wheel spin up as the lamp begins to glow. If it is not spinning then that is the first thing I would replace. During the power on sequence, if the color wheel is not detected as spinning, the set will turn off the lamp.
Since the lamp is firing up, I would not suspect the ballast. I would say having a spare ballast and lamp is very good idea for these televisions.
I have repaired these sets before and have ended up replacing the lamp, ballast, and color wheel all at the same time.
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue.
