Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Refrigerator quit working, power to compartment lights OK

Refrigerator suddenly quit...no water, no fan, no compressor, no temp control. Both compartment lights work when doors are open. Recycled power several times. Prior to stopping, vertical divider between freezer and cooler noticeably hot to the touch and freezer defrost coils occasionally glowed red. Could use some thoughts on troubleshooting.

If this is an American model refrigerator I will need to know the model number to see what may be happening. Can you post the model number? Thanks Sea BreezeRefrigerator quit working, power to compartment li - 1_10_2013_2_30_52_am.jpg

Thanks that was quick. Are you able to test some parts? This sounds like the=>https://www.pcappliancerepair.com/part-d... Please unplug power and remove the motherboard cover on the back of your refrigerator. Take it out and look over both sided for burn marks. Not all mother boards will show burn marks and will still be the motherboard as the source of the problem. How old is your refrigerator?http://appliancepartsseabreeze.com/appli...

Thanks. Done. Fridge is 10 years old. Condenser coils were pretty clogged with dust...vacuumed, cleaned...ordered new mother board and new fan motor. Will keep you posted on results.

Great! You are juming on in there! Yes tell me how it goes. You have been doing some reading....JT

Parts arrived today. Motherboard was easy to install, though the supplier of this part had changed the location slightly of the left hand primary power connector, so...it was a bit of a stretch, but not awful.

Replacing the condenser fan was a bit more bothersome, but we got 'er done.

Hooked up the power and the lights came on, the fan is purring, the compressor is compressing, the water spout is working, and the temp is coming down inside.

So...great solution! I appreciate the helpful advice!

Thank you for your rate! Was the condensor fan an issue that could have also damaged the board? Thanks John Tripp

  • Rob Hughes Jan 16, 2013

JT: Not sure what degree the motor was a factor. Although, the motherboard did not show any burn marks, I did notice that the primary capacitors (there are two on this design) were swollen indicating an abnormal power draw from something. The extreme amount of dust on the condenser coil led me to an assumption of "guilt" that the condenser fan was probably working really hard and had probably exceeded its design limits. So...since I had the back off, and since I had cleaned the entire underneath...it seemed like a prudent thing to do. Interestingly, swapping out the motor turned out to be a bit of a bear and if I ever have to do it again, there are some tricks I could possibly pass on! Checked the fridge this morning...temp is stable at 37F in the fridge and 0F in the freezer...almost like having a new refrigerator!

Reason I asked was sometimes fan motors cause the motherboard failures. In your case I do believe a surge caused the capacitors to swell. Ten years for a Artica/Profile is a good long time unless you had repairs before. Anyway thanks again and good luck, John Tripp

SOURCE: Refridgerator/Freezer stopped cooling

if the compressor was very hot to the touch, suspect you have a compressor fault

SOURCE: refrigerator Compressor hot to touch & fridge/freezer not cooling

you need to do an amp draw with your meter, clamp the run wire on the compressor, you should get 2-5 amp reading, any higher means the compressor is going bad, also should be a locked rotor amp(LRA) reading on comp.-mike

I ran into this problem last year on the same or similar model.
if there is no cooling or fans or compressor running ,but lights are on in both compartments, and no control numbers are on the electronic control mounted to the left of the compressor is the cause of the
problem. It is expensive but rebuilts are available on Ebay .Ive
used national rebuilder parts many times, with excelent results.

Sounds like the overload/relay , is bad on the compressor . This piece just plugs on to the side of the compressor . Take your model number with you to get the correct part .

Our 4 year old GE side by side frig suddenly warmed to 64 degrees. Freezer stopped freezing and is at 43. Motor is running.

Really need to know what motor(s) are running (compressor, evap fan inside freezer compartment, condenser fan under fridge)?? Of course, check your temperature (thermostat) settings. Side-by-sides usually have 2 of them. They should be labled for refridgerator and freezer. The freezer control usually only opens a baffle from the freezer compartment to the refridge compartment. The refrigerator temp control is the one that controls the compressor on-off cycles and the temp of refrig compartment (this keeps the refrig compartment from freezing the milk and cokes) If the freezer control/baffle is set too far open, this will cause the refrig temp control to shut off too soon for the freezer temp to get low enough. These controls can get bumped out of the correct setting accidently from time to time.
To check the following, the fridge has to be running, or in a condition where it "should be" running: If compressor is running (condenser fan should be too), check if evaporator fan (inside freezer) is running. Open (freezer) door and hold door light switch in when you check evaporator fan operation (some fans stop when door is open) If it is not running you may have a bad evaporator fan motor. It could also be a bad defrost timer, causing the evaporator (also inside back of freezer) to ice-up. This blocks the air flow over evap. Also, there is a defrost terminator switch on the evaporator coil that stops the defrost cycle when coil is clear of ice/frost (but timer hasn't ended defrost cycle). If it is defective, that could also keep the fridge from going into the defrost cycle, or taking it out too soon. If it is the timer, change the defrost terminator as well. Depending on how handy you are, you may be able to check/change any of these parts yourself. If you don't know much about elecrical stuff, you should leave it to a repair tech. Hope this helps.
