Click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question /exclamation mark ? ! or a red X right click to update driver You might have to physically unplug the leads for this cd/dvd computer then plug them back in restart your this should activate the found new hardware wizard. If this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem "you only need to do the following" if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer Close all open programs Click on Start, Run, and type regedit and press Enter Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control Class {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column. Upper Filters Lower Filters Upper Filters.bak Lower Filters.bak If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

After deleting the keys, close the registry editor
Reboot your computer
Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone. Hope this helps. if this fails to fix the problem

It could be a problem with the lens you could use a liquid type lens cleaner place 2-3 drops on top of a cd/dvd then run it

Uninstall Chrome and see if that temporarily fixes the problem. Chrome is a browser it should have no effect on the optical drive. Is the drive listed in My Computer?

What fix to apply to HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B in Dell Dimension E310 so it can read/play a dvd movie?

Try the following:

1. Go to the Dell.com support site and be sure you have the latest updates for your computer's operating system and the DVD drive, especially the DVD drive's drivers BIOS.

2. Make sure you have the software to play the movie, like Sonic, Windows Media Player, Power DVD, Quicktime, etc. and be sure they are the latest versions.

3. Depending on the movie format, not all DVD drives will play all DVDs. The most common discs are DVD-R and DVD+R and file types like *.avi, *.mpeg, *.mp4, *.mov and then commercial formats. Also try the movie in another machine or DVD player and see what happens.

Disc drive no longer reads discs, when trying to burn error "please insert empty disc" pops every time, regardless of CD inserted.

Assuming you have already tried a cleaning kit, the unit has probably burnt out the laser and will need replaced. Luckily new DVD+R burners can be found for less than $25.

I got this Dell Dimension E310 from someone else and i need the operation system cd and she don't have it.where can i find one? it won't let me play dvd's,and a friend said i need the original discs.

you should be able to pick up a disk for next to nothing on ebay.or borrow 1 from a friend. it is the code that is the most important thing. their should be a sticker on the case somewhere with the xp licence code.
