First, read the owner's manual and see which type of SIM card your phone accepts or is configured to make use of for it to operate
Sim cards come in 3 different shapes
1. Normal Sim card
2. Micro Sim card (mid way)
3. Nano Sim card (smallest)

There are SIm card adapters so you can use Micro Sim card in Normal Sim card only phones

There are Sim card adapters so you can use Nano Sim cards in either Micro Sim card or Normal Sim card phones.

Insert the tip of the SIM eject tool or a straightened paper clip into the hole of the SIM card tray on the side of the iPad.

Press the SIM eject tool or paper clip firmly into the hole until the SIM tray ejects.

Remove the SIM card from the tray, if necessary, and place the other SIM card in the tray.

Push the SIM card tray back into the iPad.

I have a new phone and ive put the sim card in and it says invalied sim

Could be a bad sim card. New phone could be defective. Or, if you just upgraded to say a 3G phone and are trying to use an old sim card, it may not be compatible. If you are using the new card that was sent with the phone, try calling the provider and having them activate the sim card if you have not done so.
