Question about Dell Alienware M15x Gaming Notebook

1 Answer

M15x gaming laptop screen wont come on after sleep mode or reboot. What can I do?

Last night, I shut down the computer. It was installing updates, so I left the room for about 3 hours. When I came back in it was on update 10 of 12. 40 minutes later it was still on update 10 of 12 and I was going to bed so I put it in sleep mode for the night and would finish in the morning. Well, this morning I pressed power to come out of sleep mode, and everything came on as usual except the screen. No flashing LEDs, btw. I tried rebooting and it didn't do anything. What can I do?

I tried every button, rebooted, even plugged it into another moniter. None of it worked, so finally I tried to mess with the brightness, and then the screen popped on.

Looking at your last comment, it looks like you got it working??? Just an heads up, in the future, you might not want to put your laptop into sleep/standy mode while performing an update. If you lose power or have to do a hard shutdown you could corrupt the update and your PC might not boot back up.

SOURCE: Dell Inspiron 1521 Laptop's screen wont turn on at

Try this: Turn on your system while watching the display at an angle to see if there is any 'ghosting' to be seen. If there is, then either the display back-light (CCFL) or the inverter that supplies the high voltage for it has failed. The back-light lamps have a limited lifetime and the inverters are fairly frequent failures.
Unless you are very skilled with your hands and have a few tools, this isn't a good 1st project.

Check the BIOS for PC Health settings. It is possible that you have put a low value for "Critical Temperature", which makes the Laptop to turn off.

VPCSA does not properly go to sleep / hibernate

My advice is to shut down and unplug the Laptop when not in use. Set the Power Options to High Performance, set Sleep and Hibernate to never, adjust your Advanced Power to shut down when lid is closed. A reboot everyday resets the computer and IF there is a Power Surge your Laptop will not get fried. If left plugged in the battery COULD malfunction and become a fire hazard. Not to mention the unnecessary power applied to components and shortening their lifespan.

How to Shutdown or Turn off your Computer Properly

There's nothing wrong with powering your laptop, or desktop, down by clicking the Power button and letting it go into standby, sleep, or hibernate mode, much of the time. On your laptop, usually just tapping the Power Button will perform the same function as the following instructions.
When doing this, click on the 69966d5.jpg symbol just to the right of the Start button. This allows all open windows to be suspended properly, with current data saved. When you startup the next morning, your open programs will still be running in the background. Clicking on your logon will have your right back where you left off.
If you see the same symbol with the exclamation mark 15ca2e0.jpg, click and leave the computer alone, because it will be in the process of installing important updates before shutting down.

Nothing beats a complete "Shut Down" through the Start menu in the lower left-hand corner of your Windows screen. Mouse-over to the far right icon, and click on Shut Down in the popup window. All your open programs will be closed properly, data saved, and memory and cache cleared. This is like going to bed at night with nothing on your mind, sleeping soundly, and waking up refreshed in the morning.

Then, when the computer is powered up the next time, it will be operating at its optimum performance levels without being "bogged" down with excessive leftover garbage from previous sessions. It leaves you with a fresh start-up the next time you are ready to use your computer.

To summarize, tapping the Power button most of the time, and allowing the computer to enter sleep mode, is fine. Occasionally, do a complete Shut Down to clear everything out of memory. Your laptop/desktop will thank you...lol.

Gateway MT6840 unexpectedly shut down and wouldn't

First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.

How do i test the power button on a toshiba equium l40 laptop

OpenControl Panel, Power settings, Advanced Power settings, change SLEEP to Never, Hibernate to never. Shut down and unplug, if you use mostly on AC, remove battery, your laptop when not in use. It will last longer, if there is a power surge not be damaged, and a reboot every day resets the computer.

I have a Dell Optiplex 780 and when I am logged in and walk away for 15 or more minutes it will go to sleep, I will then come back wake it up, log in and the screen will go black and I cannot get in unless...

This problem is ongoing because you have it configured to sleep turn the sleep mode off. What it is doing is attempting to load drivers again and not saving to cache when in sleep mode you may have not enough storage allotted for the sleep mode to save information go and increase the storage memory to store the data so that when it sleeps it can store the data and wake up with your screen as it was when you left it.
Personally I do not use sleep mode never have, never will. It is nothing but a problem for me anyway. I always keep my machines running with the exception of a lap top. So my suggestion is turn sleep mode off. I also log out and then log back in same principal really. Or just close the machine totally power it down. Sleep mode was a wonderful concept along with shutting down hard discs etc. However you will often times be more into a hassle than just leaving it on or shutting it down. Less work for a computer is better just my humble opinion.
Last but not least, my last resort would be to re-install operating system again once I start getting to many things going wrong with my machines I do them over solving all sorts of problems that are behind the scenes that take hours sometimes to repair individually. This would be after you retrieve your lost files from the drive. John

If your laptop won't respond to the wake up keypress you can hold the power button down for five seconds and your laptop will shut down. Then you can reboot it. You might want to go to the screen saver power options and prevent it from going to sleep if the problem persists.

Cannot start up my laptop since in done an update

Try booting into "Last known good configuration" it is on the same screen as Safe Mode, if that does not work, you can try to run CHKDSK /r from the windows install CD, just choose "Repair" in the option, if this does not work I suggest removing that hard drive and slaving it into another computer to get your data off and then reload Windows onto it. It is missing a .dll
