Re: have picture lose picture tv turns off and on
The lamp has a life cicle. if yours is been used a lot. then the lamp has to be changed. when the tv cannot turn on steady and gets off imm. the computer inside the tv tries to turn off the set but the lamp charges again and the micro tends to keep working. the first step to take in this tv is to change the lamp to eliminate this common source of problems

You have a CRT projection TV. There's no lamps in this that can be swapped out. The technology is very similar to a glass tube CRT TV.
If the picture disappeared but you still have sound then you haven't pressed the wrong input or pressed the picture mute because sound would go too. As a quick check, try any function (vol, contr, bri etc) that normally brings up an onscreen display. If that has gone too then it's a TV issue with the drives to the three tubes. If the OSD is still visible, then the problem is either a source signal issue (broken or disconnected cable; menu changed to affect the signal output of an external source) or the TV isn't processing the signal correctly.
For TV problems where something has broke, the answer is getting the TV repaired or replaced.
amber is the colour...remove LAMP assembly...properly re-insert LAMP assembly back into TV...make sure it looks secure....close door and tighten screw.....door MUST be shut properly or TV will not operate correctly..it sounds too easy i understand TRY it you might be surprised!!!
Since you do have sound but snow for picture is your TV 54J or 54U chassis the PT50DL54J chassis shows 4 tuners also Have you look for Leaky or Bad capacitors if they are puffed up on top they are Bad 2200uf 25v 1000uf 25v Look for bad capacitors on tuner Boards, and I have seen where they are on Power supply board that will affect Picture.
Yes there is a Service Code you need in order to set convergence and on this set it is not easy to enter! 1) Switch Antenna to cable (2) Set Sleep Timer to 30 mins,Exit menu Enter ch 124 (3) Now Press vol- on front of TV / A red CHK should appear on screen / NOW enter menu and turn sleep timer off / Exit again, now Press Power untill you see 0V00 press ch up untill you see 0V1 Then Press vol+ you should now have convergence Pattern on screen. To adjust use (ch- ch+ and vol- vol+) (cursor) moves to where you want to adjust (mute) locks place you want to adjust RTune changes R-G-B when done make sure you Save adjustments.
This happened to me and it turned out the closed captioning on my TV were activated somehow. I never even touch the controls on the TV but I had to manually check the settings on the TV and found that the captions were on.
