Re: I have 2 x 2gb ram, and can't find 2nd slot for one...
if you only have 1 slot, on the underside of the laptop.
it,s most likely, if there are any more slots, they,ll be under the Keyboard.
This will possibly be, where the 512 mb is now, although some laptops do have on-board memory chips from 256-512mb. ( try under the Keyboard )

The 2nd 2Gb RAM module may be faulty or not compatible with the other RAM module. Try inserting one RAM module in the notebook at a time to determine which RAM module is faulty. If both RAM modules work then make sure both RAM modules are the same make and speed.
The T42 can support up to 2 Gb of RAM.
The laptop comes with 512Mb of RAM under the keyboard and a spare memory slot on the bottom of the laptop.
To install 2Gb of RAM put 1Gb in the memory slot under the kerboard - need to remove the old RAM and put the other 1Gb in the memory on the bottom of the laptop
64-bit Double Data Rate (DDR) non-parity SDRAM memory
PC2700 at 333MHz
Two 200 pin SO-DIMM memory slots, one slot is pre-populated with 256MB or 512MB, leaving one socket available
hi, it will work as your notebook is supporting maximum 4 gb RAM but please check that you are using 32 bit operating system or 64 bit one. If it is 32 bit then the system will be showing 3.2 gb RAM only as this is the 32 bit os limitation.
Compaq are a bit fussy with RAM and usually don't like mixed RAM - brand, speed, & sometimes size.
You model may not support more than 2GB, check the specs..
Try inserting a single 2Gb RAM to see if it works.
If it dosen't work and the laptop won't support more than 2Gb, you may need to install two 1Gb RAM modules.
The problem is that your laptop only supports 2 GB of RAM. If there is not a newer bios allowing more then 2 GB is the max you can go. Since you put the 2 GB in one slot then the other slot will be useless. It wouldn't matter how much you put in the 2nd slot because the bios already says you have 2 GB on board and will not accept anymore. Sorry.
The T40 has two ram slots, you can put a 1g chip in each totaling 2g. If the chip will remove, then it is changeable. Vista needs a minimum of 256 to run, so, when you change BOTH chips to equal 2g it will probably read 1.744g, or it may read the full 2g. If it only reads 1g, then the second slot under keyboard may have malfunctioned. It could also be that the 256 chip is bad and your really only running 512 now. With all that said, in order to achieve 2g, you will need to put a 1g chip in each slot.
