SOURCE: Outer tub bearings are gone
My bearings went out too and I found this site http://www.neptunebearing.com/ Ordered the bearings and the Tony Tool. My son and I replaced the bearings in about 2 hours!

Get the bearings here.
You'll also need the seal kit.
These guys have them
I'm not affiliated with either company. If you can find them elsewhere cheaper more power to you.
Maytag told me I had to buy the tub for around $700.
I am halfway through this repair on mine. I haven't ordered the parts yet.
All the parts should cost you around $60-$70 + shipping.
The bearings are very difficult to remove. Some douche online rents a tool for $400 deposit + like $150 rental fee. I pounded mine out with a metal rod. The tool would probably be easier.

SOURCE: The bearings in the Maytag
If you think that there is no shake or play in the bearings a good wash with kerosene or diesel will take away all the dirt that causes the noise. The use light grease/heavy oil (90) to fill into the bearings.
Tip: repeat the washing with the diesel, use a good small brush and hold a tray under to pour the diesel and collect on to the tray till the noise subsides.
However if the bearings are still noisy then I think you need not replace the drum .
If Helpful credit me for the tip.

SOURCE: Can you replace the outer
yes you can but will warn you it is a small project to do... the unit will require to be dismantled in order to get to the outer bearings... the lower unit taken apart and tub springs, drain hoses and taken out of machine to access everything... can be done but is about a 2 hour project if it is your first time to do it...
