Question about Washing Machines

Washing machine problem

I have a 13 year old Kenmore top-load washing machine (model # 4560291). Recently, I replaced a coupler (2nd time in its life so far) with a new part purchased from Sears Parts & Services. Ever since that, the machine has been workable. However, when it enters a spin cycle the first time after sitting there unused for a day or so, as the tub starts to turn, it produces a loud banging noise - about once per turn. The noise gradually diminishes and eventually vanishes as the tub revs up. This noise happens only if the machine has been sitting there unused for a day or so, and does not appear during subsequent washing/spinning cycles. I visually checked everything I could but am not able to find anything wrong. May I ask if you can kindly point out to me where the problem could possibly be? Thank you very much!

It appears your clutch is starting to fail in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to PartSelect.com or RepairClinic.com and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

Thanks for using FixYa - a 4 THUMBS rating is appreciated for answering your FREE question

I have a Kenmore top loading large capacity washer model 1028882791. It began washing as usual then began to making a loud humming sound. The agitation stopped. It only makes a loud humming sound. I...

The humming sound is coming from the drive motor running but unable to drive the agitator nor the basket to spin. The drive motor is definitely running as the drain function works because of the fact that drain pump is directly coupled with the rear spline of the motor. The drain pump works in either direction as long as the motor runs. The problem is obviously a broken motor coupler which transfers the mechanical energy of the motor to the transmission. The solution then is to replace the broken coupler. Click on the link below for the detailed step-by-step procedure in replacing the motor coupler.

Kenmore 70 Series Washing Machine Drains, But Won't Spin

Yes sir, a bad motor coupler could cause the machine not to spin. You did the right thing in checking out the lid switch and the pump first. It sounds as if the motor coupling is worn and may be slipping. I will attach a link to a video that may assist you. Hope this helps and best wishes.

Roper top load washing machine that won't aggitate

Hi, It is most likley that the coupler is bad. The coupler connects the motor to the transmission. If the motor runs and you get neither spin or agitate, this is the most common problem. If this is something you want to try and fix, you can go to 222.whirlpoolsurplusparts.com and there I have a detailed article on how to change the coupler.
I hope this helps you. If I can assist you further, please let me know.

Thanks,
Vic

Noisy wash cycle

if it's 10 year old it's not worth repairing if the transmission is bad.  However, if it's only the $20 coupler that connects the motor to the transmission.  Fix it.

if its less than 15 years old its a direct drive whirlpool, no belt, remove the cabinet, not the back panel. look up direct drive whirlpool washer cabinet removal on internet, and replace the coupler, most likely, if it drains.
