Ruud heatpump with electrice heat backup

No heat when set on 'EM'. The fan will go on but no heat. The compressor does not come on but that is a good thing. Yes there is 220 to the furnace.

Thanks for you question, I am mr.grzz,
with the unit in em heat, only the electric strip heat will come on, or should, if you are not getting any heat from the heat strips, then you probably have a bad sequencer, these bring on the heating strips, you will more than likely have to replace the sequencer thats bad, sometimes its burned out on top, you might be able to see it, you could tap the sequencer with a plastic pen to see if it is sticking, does the fan come on when in em heat ? if not you may have a bad circuit board, please check your filters as this is very critical for the system to function right, well good luck, hope I was helpful, thanks again, mr.grzz

Sounds like one or more of the following -

1) the thermal fuse for each of the elements have melted
2) the elements themselves have broken and opened
3) Heat sequencers have failed
4) One or more fuses inside the heater have failed (if fuses were installed from the factory.).

Items 1 and 2 are indications of poor airflow through the unit for some reason (dirty filter, closed vents, dirty evaporator/buildup of dirt/dust on evaporator.)

Heatpump r-22 rudd system, unit runs starts out heating then compressor stops in middle of heating ,this unit has a out side air temp. sensor just wondering if possible bad board or not

If compressor stops in middle, check the following.
1.Thermostat setting must be minimum +3 degree than your room temp
2. Check it's in heat "mode"
3. Check indoor and outdoor coils are clean.
4. Check fan motor is working alright.
5. Outside sensor and room air sensor is placed correctly.
6. Gas pressure is o.k
7.Check compressor is overheated, even all the above is o.k.

Unit set to heat but outside unit fan won't turn on. Outside temp is below freezing. The weird thing is that you unit is putting out heat and not set to emergency heat

If it is a heatpump, the outside unit should not turn on below 35degrees or so. Below that temperature, the unit cannot effeciently exchange heat. When the outside temperature is low, the system automatically switches over to auxillary heat which uses the same heating elements as emergency heat.

Rudd heatpump compressor runs outside fan dose

I don't think the fan on it' own crates the problem. Could you find out what should be and what actually is the flow through it. Ruud heat pump makes a clicking sound

Many thermostats have a setting to keep the fan running instead of cycling with the compressor. Check its settings.

Compressor fan not running

Does it look like the coils are frosting over? Is it steaming? Keep watching, after about 30 min does the fan come back on?

If yes to any/all the above then the unit is probably in defrost mode and yes the fan will stop blowing during that time, but restart when the unit goes back into regular heat mode.

During this time you will likely notice warmer heat from the vents than normal and the "AUX or EM HEAT" light will be on.

That is your backup heat system. It should automatically come on during a defrost cycle.
