That the bottom plate off, check for a clog in the inlet. If clear, then you probably have a clog in the handle tube. You will have to take the handle loose to clean it out. It may also need a new belt if you haven't changed it for a while, they stretch.

SOURCE: replace belt on my oreck xl

Either have to take the bottom plate off, or there is a small door with one screw to remove to replace the belt. Then it goes around the motor shaft and then over the pulley on the brush roll.

SOURCE: While vacuuming it's unusually hard to push.

Hi,
I see your post is from May. I just joined Fixya this month so, id you're still looking for a solution, I would saythe belt broken or is so stretched the roller isn't spinning. Here is an link to an online guide with illustrations for changing belt. Also check the roller brushes for wear and change if necessary. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: My Oreck XL has quit sucking. The brush turns but

Same problem here with XL9100. Bag would not expand implying no suction. Motor ran and brushes turned. Easy disassembly using common tools found that a plastic bag had been sucked up and caused a blockage prior to the impeller. Cleaned up, reassembled, and everything worked fine after that.

Replaced belt but still smell smoke odor

Hello, this is Leland with Crucial Vacuum,

If you are smelling a smoke order one of two things may be wrong with your unit:

Firstly, the motor may be the problem. If you hear any noises while the machine is running, you should contact the original manufacturer for trouble shootingsolutions.

Secondly, your vacuum may be in need of new parts. By changing either the brushroll or belts, you should be able to increase the quality of the suction, and eliminate any smoke odors. Since you have already replaced the belts, I have copied a link to the compatible roller brush that we carry for your unit!

Why is it hard to push?

Lester,
It could be a couple of things, first, I would remove the five screws that hold your base plate on and look at your brush. At each end of the brush you have a bearing block and there are two different height settings. If you see several "hash" marks on the top of the block, it is in the new setting position and you need to rotate the block 180 degrees so that there is only one "hash" mark showing and then put the brush back on and put the belt back in place and replace the base plate and screws and then try the vacuum and see if that helps. If you only see the one "hash" mark when you take the base plate off, then you need a new brush roller. This would also be a good time to put in a new belt as well if you have not replaced in in a while. You could also have a problem pushing your vacuum if you recently replaced your carpet and you have a real thick pile. Oreck does make a high pile attachment that can be mounted on the bottom of most of their models, but you will need your model number so that you get the right one. Hope this helps!

The brush on Oreck XL vacuum is not turning

Frank,
I work at an Oreck store and my manager & I were discussing your problem and the only thing that we could come up with is wondering if you were putting the belt around the brush roller, the motor shaft and the post for the screw to hold on the belt cover. If you put it around the last item in the list, that may be your problem. I have seen many vacuums come in with the belt around that and it is not supposed to go there. The only other thing that I can suggest is to make sure that you do not have anything in the base plate that would be jamming the brush when you put it on. Hope this helps!

Replacing the belt for the motor

the brush roller lifts up and out. Just lift it out but your belt around the roller and belt shaft and push the brush roller back down. I own one too.

Brushes will not turn on oreck xl classic. caught rug in vacuum and then it will not turn..is there a reset button

If the motor is running but the brush roller is not, then the belt is probably snapped or burned through and needs replaced. If nothing is running when you try to turn it on I would recommend taking it to a service center because you may have burned out the motor. If it is just the belt, that is something that you can do yourself.

Oreck brush only turns a tiny bit and belt pulley get hot belt not turning much either

If your brush is not turning properly then you need to check the bearing ends to see if there is any hair, string, or thread wound around the brush shaft. If there is and you can remove it, that might fix your problem otherwise I would suggest getting a new brush roller.

Just purchased a reconditioned model. Makes a ton of noise and the bottom brush doesn't seem to turn like in my old Oreck. Does that indicate it needs a new belt?

Your Dyson does have a belt but its one that cant be replaced it is called a clutch assy. if your roller brush isnt spinning then it could be that you dont have the purple knob on the left hand side if your facing the vacuum to the carpet setting. if you do have it on the carpet setting and its still not spinning then your clutch need to be replaced.
dyson roller brushes donot rotate as fast as Oreck roller brushes. in fact they are rotate at about half the speed. so keep that in mind.

I bought a replacement brushroll because the one in the vaccum cleaner is worn out.How do I go about putting the brush in the vaccum cleaner. Do I pull it out or do I have to unscrew the entire bottom...

Greetings from GoVacuum,

Make sure the vacuum is NOT plugged in. In order to replace the roller brush, you'll need to unscrew the 6 screws on the bottom plate of the vacuum cleaner. Oreck uses a Phillips Head screw, so you'll need to get a Phillips head screw driver to replace the brush.

After removing the screws from the bottom plate, simply pull up on the plate by putting your fingers into the open area where the existing brush is located. After the bottom plate has been removed you will have access to the roller brush and belt.

You can now just grab the roller brush and pull straight up on it. It's beneficial to change the belt of the vacuum when you're replacing the roller brush anyways. There is a spare belt on the actual bottom plate of all Oreck XL vacuums.

You'll notice that the new roller brush has two black square plastic caps on both sides of the roller brush. You can look on the outside of this black cap, and you'll see the words OLD and NEW. Rotate the NEW side so it's facing upwards, and the OLD side is the side that's down inside the vacuum cleaner, make sure that both sides have the NEW side facing upwards. You'll need to wrap the belt around the silver pin in the back of the vacuum on one side, and through the roller brush's metal pulley on the other side. The just stretch the belt with the brush inside of it, and place the black plastic parts back into the vacuum cleaner.

Congratulations, you've now just replaced the roller brush in your Oreck!

Installing roller brush for oreck XL 21

uh, probably not sure what the issue is, but
1. unplug unit.
2. Remove the multiple screws from the bottom of the unit.
3. remove the bottom baseplate (usually black)
4. the brush roll is now visible, and the belt should be around it.
5. Pull the brush roll away from the unit, and disengage the belt.
6. Replace in the opposite order. Make sure that baseplate fits properly to insure a good seal. Also watch the bumper (rubber part that is wrapped around the unit) to make sure it is properly seated.
7. Handroll the roller brush before plugging in. Make sure it moves freely.
8. Run unit, may get a slight burning smell, but if this continues for more than a minute - turn off and inspect the unit. Brush roll requires a short burn in time, on initial build, factory accomplishes this during test procedures.
