When printing in color the colors are off set

Black toner works fine for printing but when I try to print color copies the three colors do not print on top of each other rather they offset each other and it looks almost like 3-D

I tried to shake the color cartridges and that did not work.

I am having a problem with color copies when the print comes out the colors are off-set and the image looks 3-D

The printer goes into recalibrate mode itself. it has done this a few times and still no success.

Where are the optics to be cleaned? Where are they located and what do they look like?

  • kevinroberts Jan 20, 2009

They are still off set by taking the color toners out and shaking them

Defective toner cartriges, or refilled or refurbished toner can cause HP printer not calibrating , if you are using non original toners, that may be the cause.
If toners are originals (yeah I know they are expensive) then see if you have a set of cartridges to test the printer, even half empty will do.

There is also a firmware issue related to calibration problem, if you have old firmware, that can cause the calibration procedure failing on determined circumstances.
Ensure you have the latest firmware, call HP to verify, read the thread below:

Business support forums - HP Color LaserJet 3600n

If the printer does not calibrate, you did calibration procedure properly, and toner is new and original one, then there is a fault.
Usually when printer does not calibrate, that is because one or more density sensors, environmental sensor or the board are faulty.

Call HP to get step by step instructions on how to locate and remove parts without damaging the printer:

Hi!
Sounds like toner cartridges are shorting against each other or with the roller, may be due to dirty roller or toner powder spill. It happens when the toner powder is peviously charged and will not stick with the other toner powder, and so would appear as a spectrum thing.

Your colour toner cartridges needs to be removed and cleaned with a dry  cloth.as this happens if the toner power is leaked from the toner.or also if the toner is near to empty.it leaks because the waste toner collector gets full and then it leaks while printing.to resolve just get it refilled or replaced,it will solve the problem.

The assembly is misaligned creating the laser optics to print in a shaded mode on each other.clean the optics and check or else get it replaced.

Lexmark pro 900 will not print color

Try to check your printing preferences if it's set to print using all available ink or check if it's set to print in black and white. To do that, on the application that you're printing from, click on File > Print > Preferences/Properties.

Also, make sure that the firmware of your printer is up to date. Just go to http://bit.ly/ghfW8H to download the firmware update.

After you click print, and just before you print, go to your 'printing preferences' or 'print settings' in the popup window. From there, cycle through the tabs, and ensure that 'print quality' is NOT at draft and IS on normal or high quality. Alternatively, you change the 'print resolution' in this window, if the option is available. Resolution is usually given in 'dpi' so choose the highest 'dpi' value. This should hopefully give you darker prints

Ninty-five percent of all image issues like this are caused by the carona-drum-toner assembly. I have not worked on this model but the only way to diagnose the issue is to try a new drum / toner cartridge and see what impact it has. Then once you resolve the issue you can discuss the service life after the fact.

How do I set my 5550n printer to print only black and white copies and color on demand?

If you go into control panel then go printer options you should see your printer icon. Right click on it and go printer preferences or printer properties and I think there is a colour tab where you can set it to just back and white
