Kenwood KDC-X590 Faceplate display problem

You posted a solution on the web regarding re-soldering some resistors. I'm just trying to verify the location of these resistors. You are talking about he main unit itself, not the face plate, right? I tried a replacement face plate and the problem did not correct, so I assume the problem is inside the main unit, right?

Thanks,

Julian

tech48 you the man. Money was running low at the old homestead. The last thing that I had money for was a new radido! Driving to work and listening to my radio was my time. The display not working on my Kenwood made that a nightmare. 30 mins. and a little solder and I was back in business.
    Thanks again

I have no problem with the soldering. I used to teach soldering. How do you get it out of the dash?

Yes, the problem is inside the main unit. I have fixed hundreds of these radios over the years.
The solder on these resistors get heat stressed and stop conducting properly. They just need a tiny little touch of solder.
With the radio in front of you and the face is facing you, take the top off and remove the CD mech. The CD mech can just be set over to the left a little and the ribbon cable to it can stay connected. Just move it out of the way gently. You will see a series of resistors in the right front corner area of the main board on top. They have 2R7 printed on them and there are quiite a few, all in that main area. Just resolder them and put it all back together again and the display will work normal.

Just to add that I have a KDC-W534U, it is a different set but suffers the same problem, and can be fixed with the same solution - once you remove the screw holding the top on plus another 2 holding the CD tray in place, there are eight 2R7 resistors (block of five, and block of three) in the front right corner of the main board inside the head unit (not the detachable front panel), the one nearest the corner had a dry joint or at least it came unstuck as soon as I touched one end with the iron. Resoldered both ends of all eight and the display now works fine. Thanks for the pointer :)

Tech48's solution is great. Just wanted to add that one of my resistors was bad (multimeter showed no continuity even though solder joints were good). I could not order a resistor from Kenwood (no longer available) so I ordered some from Digi-Key corp (10 for $3.30 plus shipping. Resistor case size is 2010, so to find resistors Google - resistor 2010 2.7 ohm 1/2W

It actually does work (for the KDC-W534U)! Just a small note that you need to just dab the iron on the RESISTOR side (not the underside as I thought initially). Worked a dream after. Thanks to tech48 and BogMonster!

Common Kenwood Security Codes
Many Kenwood radios are configured with the same security codes:

KCAR - This seems to be a "backdoor" to some Kenwood models.
3051 - This is the security code which is printed in the manual of many Kenwood models.
1234 - This is a security code commonly chosen by Kenwood owners.
Entering Your Kenwood Security Code
If the car battery fails or is disconnected, the Kenwood will ask for the security code.

The procedure to enter your security code differs on various models of Kenwood car stereos. Here are three of the more common procedures:

Type 1
During the code request mode, while holding the DISP key depressed, press and hold the Volume UP or DOWN key for 3 seconds until the "..." display disappears.
Enter the security code using your Kenwood remote.
Type 2
Press the "Auto" button and "Track up" on the face of radio at the same time until the four dash lines disappear.
Enter the security code using your Kenwood remote.
Type 3: Model# DPX-4020 and DPX-4030
Press and hold the 1 then the 6 preset keys until the display shows the letter 'C'.
Enter the security code using your Kenwood remote.
Entering Letters on your Kenwood Remote
To enter a letter using your Kenwood remote, press a button once for the first letter, twice for the second letter, and three times for the third letter -- then press the Track Up or Next Track key to send the letter.

To send the letter 'A', press the 2 key once and then press the Track Up key. To send the letter 'B', press the 2 key twice and then press the Track up key.

Finally, when you are done entering all of the letters, press and hold the Track Up button for 3 seconds.

The key sequence to enter the security code KCAR is:

5
5
Track Up
2
2
2
Track Up
2
Track Up
7
7
Track Up
Your Kenwood should then enter tuner mode.

A Security Code Bug in some Kenwoods
There is a reported bug in the security code handling of some Kenwood stereos. In models with thie bug, the security code is stored incorrectly. The workaround is to enter the wrong security code.

In models with this bug, you have to decrement the third character of the security code by one. If your security code was 1111, you would enter your security code as 1101. If your security code was 9999, you would enter 9989.

Midland 9001Z How To Add Talk Back Mod

great radio but I own one and never again will I get one . To add talk back you must take off the top cover, solder a 33 ohm resistor across the pa and the external speaker outputs. If it doesn't work then try another resistor but this is the way to do it . If you want it on a variable then you attach two wires from each side of the resistor to a switch and you have it. I'm trying to get rid of mine but nobody wants to buy it.cheap.

Check for any loose solder terminals at the green video output section circuit. This circuit portion can be located at the CRT board. re solder all the suspected solder terminals there. I assume you are talking about the resistor pack for the blower motor. It is mounted near the blower motor behind the glovebox.
Why are you suspecting the resistor pack is the cause of the battery drain? There are other things that can cause parasitic drain, such as vanity mirror light, glovebox light, underhood light, Onstar module. An Ammeter needs to be hooked up to the battery to monitor the current drain and then fuses need to be pulled until the excessive current is located.

there are about 8 - 10 surface mount resistors inside of the deck that need to be resoldered. They are on the front right of the board with the face toward you.

Hard to say what might be the problem, but I would be checking for the following:

a) verify all fuses (pico fuses) are not blown. They look like yellow, or green resistors typically and should be marked with some sort of "Fxxx" designator

b) Verify resistors around the STK chips are of the right value

c) Verify your soldering connections

d) It is possible the part you installed was defective. Verify you cannot move any color in any direction. (horizontal or vertical)

e) Try to verify if power is getting to the IC - if so, then likely an IC problem. If not, likely a fuse problem.

f) Finally get a schematic and verify the pinout from the STK chip to the red, blue, green connectors to ensure you did not accidently remove a surface mount resistor.

Sounds like you might have a bad connection where the faceplate connects to the unit, or the faceplate is bad.

Press power button just clicks, no power. Found

The best thing to do here that is easy-----get at the two STK-392-110 CHIPS and un-solder both of them--if the set then comes on--one is bad--you might also take a close look at all the low value resistors around them--all have location numbers on the top of the board--like RK51 etc.

If you find a discolored resistor--or if unsoldering the chips lets the set turn on----you have found your problem.

Let me know if you have questions or need help--I am here to help people.
