You can gain access to a working hard drive that is inaccessible when the system starts and assign it a drive letter under the Windows Explorer interface. Or, you can import foreign disks into Windows or create a partition and format them. You can scan a drive for bad sectors or lost clusters and repair the system files to allow access to a corrupted drive. In short, you can utilize the drives as they were intended to be used by completing some operating-system configuration steps that are occasionally required for some drive installations.

Click "Start" (the Windows Orb) and "Computer" to access the Windows Explorer screen. Right-click on the inaccessible drive and choose "Properties" from the context menu. Click the "Tools" tab and click "Check Now" under the Error-Checking section. Select both check boxes to allow the system to automatically fix file-system errors and to scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Allow the system to run the scan the next time the system is booted. Restart the computer to complete the scan and check for access after the scan completes. Click "Start" (Windows Orb) and "Computer" to access the Windows Explorer screen. Right-click on the inaccessible drive and choose "Properties" from the context menu. Click the "Security" tab and click "Edit" to change permissions for the drive. Click "Users" from the Group or User Names section. Check the "Allow" box for full control and check for access after the settings are saved. Click "Start" and "Control Panel" and then click "Administrative Tools" and double-click "Computer Management" to launch the utility. Click "Disk Management" to display a list of all detected drives in the system. Right-click in the left column of the inaccessible drive and click "Import Foreign Disk" to allow the system to convert the disk signature to a local disk. Check for access after the settings are saved. Click "Start" and "Control Panel" and then click "Administrative Tools" and double-click "Computer Management" to launch the utility. Click "Disk Management" to display a list of all detected drives in the system. Right-click in the right column of the inaccessible disk and choose "Change Drive Letters and Path." If no letter exists, click "Add" and assign a drive letter from the list of available letters. If a drive letter is listed, click "Change" and select a new letter to eliminate any conflicts with other devices in the system. Check for access after these settings are in place, which may require a restart of the system. Click "Start" and "Control Panel" and then click "Administrative Tools" and double-click "Computer Management" to launch the utility. Click "Disk Management" to display a list of all detected drives in the system. Right-click in the right column of the inaccessible disk and choose "New Simple Volume" to create a partition and format it for use. Click "Next" when the New Simple Volume Wizard appears. Click "Next" to accept the maximum for the drive. Click "Next" to accept the suggested drive letter assignment. Click "Next" to format the volume with the suggested defaults or change them if desired. Click "Finish" to format the drive and make it accessible to the operating system. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Flashing light on WD 500GB External Harddrive

This may sound silly, but sometimes if you put the drive in the freezer overnight it will work long enough for you to retrieve your data.Make sure you are ready to copy the data to another as it will likely fail again once it warms up.

SOURCE: my computer does not detect WD 500GB external hard drive

It may need to be plugged into a powered USB hub to get it to work.
I've had the same problem on certain PCs and plugging it directly into a powered hub resolves that problem. I picked up a small powered hub just for that reason that I keep with my drives.

SOURCE: How do I completely remove the WD Sync software

Assuming you are using XP, Vista, or 2000 you can format it as a NTFS drive. while a lt of folks do not like Vista, this is one area where it really shines.

Plug in your WD PASSPORT.

Bring up the START menu -> right click COMPUTER-> select MANAGE -> select STORAGE ->select DISK MANAGEMENT.

Find the dive -> select/highlight the WD PASSPORT -> right click and select FORMAT. make sure to format as an NTFS drive. Depending on the size of the drive this might take a while - so go have dinner and a movie.

PC and laptop will not recognize WD external drive. I have Window Premiun 7 new PC and noticed my pictures were being saved to My Pictures in PC. I do not want them saved there so unplugged WD then deleted...

Listen closely to the drive, if it sounds like it is clicking then it is probably not getting enough power through the USB. If you received a cable with a split dual USB plug for extra power make sure that both large USB plugs are in the computer while the smaller one is attached to the drive, this will give it enough power to start working. If it is not clicking and has plenty of power then it could be that it is mapped to a drive letter that is already in use. Under device manager, (right click my computer and select manage then click on disk management) If you see the device in there then you can right click on the bar graph representation of the disk and select to change drive letter and paths. This will allow you to remove the conflict and have it show up again.

My hard disk is western digital 500GB sata blue caviar 16MB 7200RPM .... it stopped working toady with no reason, it was working fine yesterday night, when i wake up today i found its not working any more...

> stopped working toady (froggy? today?)

It "died" -- either the electronic circuit-board "under" the "spinning" part of the disk-drive has short-circuited, or the motor that spins the recording surfaces has quit.

You've tried it on another computer -- so you've done all that you can.

Any 500GB disk-drive is likely to still be under the W.D. warranty.
Open the enclosure, and get the model-number and serial-number from the label on the disk-drive.
Then, access the W.D. web-site, and click "check warranty status", and enter that information.
If the warranty is valid, W.D. will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- purchase a new W.D. device from the W.D. web-site, and you qualify for a good discount on your purchase.

Or, remove the disk-drive from the enclosure, buy a replacement, compatible, disk-drive, and "transplant" it into the enclosure, to create a working external storage device.

WD 500Gb HDD not showing up in my computer, etc

Maybe the best thing to do is,
1) Remove WD External while pc is switched off
2) Reboot into windows
3) Doenload Ccleaner > http://www.homepc-security.co.uk/Downloads%20&%20Tutorials.html Then install.
4) Make sure you have Cleaner highlighted on the left near the top. Then put cheque marks in all boxes except, Windows Size/Location Cache, User assist History & Wipe Free Space then click Run Cleaner. Once you have repeated the step of running Run Cleaner till nothing else appears, then select the Registery cleanerthen click Scan For Issues and delete all that you find there also. Turn off pc, remove power cord then push the on button to discharge the pc, then plug in the WD Hard drive via a diffrent usb port, and boot up pc. I hope this works for you.

Help!! Western digital 500gb external hard drive ticking noise

Yes. This is going to sound strange. Put the drive in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. Next day, take it out, hook it up, and see if it is recognized.

If so, under My computer, right click on the drive - click Properties - then Tools, then Error Checking. Check box Automatically Fix File System Errors. Let it run. If everything shows up, be ready to transfer wnat you want off of it.

Freezing shrinks the metal parts . Microscopically, but often enough to get stuck parts free enough to get working.

I just went through this with a 750Gig Book. now i have reformatted the drive (after transferring all over to new drive) and the clicking is gone and all disk checks are fine and i wonder whether to trust this device ever again... Hate to just throw out a large drive.
