Question about Kodak EasyShare C340 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Dropped camera. shutter doesn't open and lens not always extends

Flash works and LED screen illuminates when the lens is extended but the shutter never opens when a picture is taken. The menu does not display when activated.
I tryed disassembly, but coud not get the electronics, black, assembly package to seperate. Is there a hidden screw somewhere, better yet is it even worth trying to repair?

SOURCE: Black Screen

I have the exact problem. I came on slowly, some days it would work, some days it wouldnt. Finally i couldnt get it working at all. Sent it back to Kodak as it was still under warranty, the repair center claims it was "physical damage". They admit that the camera shows no evidence of falling or banging but it doesnt matter. The camera was lightly used only by my wife, she took good care of it. I'm currently fighting with Kodak, they are requesting photos from the repair center, so they claim. I think its lost cause, but we'll see.

Look closely for sand particles that may be lodged around the gaps of the lens barrel. Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

I have the canon sx100 is, it dropped and now the shutter eye won't open

If only the shutter eye is not opening but the lens is extending properly, then you will need to remove the fron shutter frame and review it.

It may be that one (or both) springs that open the lens protector are loose, or the plastic tab that allows to open/close the lens protector is broken.

If the lens does not extend when the camera is powered on, then lens assembly is damaged.

Unfortunately, such Canon SX100 (and the SX110 too) has a very fragile lens assembly, and it's damaged very easily. Most of the times the internal gears, the plastic post guides and the motor are damaged at the same time, so the only solutio is to replace the whole lens assembly.

The lens replacement requires a qualified camera repair technician, unless you want to try in repair it yourself, which requires tools (scredrivers, soldering iron, desoldering tool, magnifier glass with light, etc).

Best regards,

Casio Exilim Z40 - Lens Error Message

You can try to "fix" this problem by holding down the shutter release button as soon as the camera power up.If this does not work you will need to replace the lens assembly. This should only be done by a qualified tech.
This is usually caused by one of two circumstances. (1) The user dropped the camera while the lens was extended causing a mechanical failure. (2) The lens attempts to extend while in a pouch or pocket without the user's knowledge. This usually happens when the user is carrying the camera with the battery in. When/if the REC button or power button is pressed accidentally, the lens will attempt to extend but can't. This causes the servo motors to "smoke".

Lens cover stays open

Try blowing lots of compressed air around the open lens shutter to clean the mechanism. Or use a hair dryer for a few seconds (don't want to heat up the camera). Also with the lens barrel extended and pointed downward, tap the lens barrel with a pencil while you extend and retract the lens by powering the camera on and off. A grain of sand in the mechanism is usually the culprit, and you want to try to dislodge it.

You can open it up, but only as a very last resort. The above procedures usually work if you try them enough. But for those particularly nasty stuck mechanisms, here's an example repair on a Canon Powershot A400 (do this at your own risk, and it will void your warranty):

Frozen lens and shutter

Press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix your problem. In any case it could not make it worse Good luck!
