SOURCE: steam wand

As the espresso is being made, you can steam the milk by opening the valve that goes to the wand. (sometimes there is a "switch")
To steam milk:
-Fill pitcher (or whichever container you want) with milk e**ugh for about 2/3 of your cup. A thermometer would be helpful.
-Place pitcher under the wand and lift it so that only 1/2 inch is under the surface of the milk.
-Open the steam valve. The milk will expand as it heats. Lower the pitcher to maintain the 1/2 inch depth. You should hear a "shushing" sound and have ** splattering.
-When milk is about 150 F (or preferred temp), close the steam valve and wipe the wand with a damp towel or else themilk will cake on the wand.

Good Luck

SOURCE: Needing a Francis Francis X3 portafilter and steam head

If you have no luck finding a FF! portafilter, you can use the ones from some Ascaso models. See http://coffee-stuff.blogspot.com/2009/11/thing-of-beauty.html for more details.

SOURCE: No water coming through portafilter to make espresso.

You have a stuck check valve. Try running the pump with the steam knob open, then shutting it then, opening it 4 or 5 times and see if it will pop open. Make sure that you don't have the portafilter in at the time you are doing this.

Why won't my portafilter stay engaged once the water starts dripping? It flies off and sprays coffee grounds, and this started last week. Stays in place only if I wrestle with the filter handle.

It is possible that the grind you are using is too fine and causing so much back pressure that the portafilter is moving, also possible that the group gasket installed need to be replaced, I have also seen this happen with damaged screens.

They require a bit of effort to push them in when new, you should have gotten a set of single wall and dual wall baskets. There is a spring clip inside the grouphead (portafilter) and you have to overcome the clamping of the spring it is a reasonably tight fit to stop the basket retaining in the machine.

Temperature problem

Keep portafilter in the head with no coffee in it at all times, preheat portafilter and cup before you brew a coffee.

No water coming through - New Gaggia Baby Dose

Try this remove the portafilter, then press the button for brewing coffee and then turn on the machine, if both hoses are in the water reservoir, then water should flow out of the head after a few seconds.

Makeing coffee

No, these machines use a pressurized portafilter to make brewing espresso easier. Be sure your coffee is ground about the fineness of table salt. Just level the coffee in the filter and insert the filter as instructed.

Saeco portafilter instructions

When using ground coffee, use coarser grind like the size of table salt grain. Feel the ground coffee for adjustment. Do not tamp, just level the cup with coffee grounds and lock the portafilter into the group ring. Pull the handle all the way to the right and hold. Turn espresso hot water switch on. Hold the portafilter pulled all the way to the right for 5 seconds (pre-infusion pressure builds up to 9 bars). Release the handle at the end of 5 seconds. Espresso shots should be max. 2-Oz. in the cup. For larger quantity, use two shots. For an Americano, add hot water instead of allowing 8-Oz. water to pump through the coffee grounds.
