Question about HP Pavilion dv3z Entertainment Notebook
If I get the chance... I power down correctly. However, this pc is very subtle in it's warning about low battery level. There is an almost inaudible "ping", once, and a small warming image goes on in the bottom corner. (My old pc had a message that came up center screen -- impossible to miss.) Anyway, because of this, my laptop sometimes "dies" from low battery without being shut down properly. Also, recently I changed the "close lid" option to SLEEP. Laptop usually comes right back on... but I read on another post that the sleep option stressed the hard drive somehow. (Myth or truth?) This time I left my laptop to go to the bathroom and when I came back the screen was black/blank like it was hibernating or sleeping. Other lights on. Screen does not relight. Hmmm. I forced/turned off with the power button. Turned back on... same problem: fan & indicator lights on, no screen light/image. I'm currently letting it sit for an hour with the battery out and no power cable. What else to try if that fails? Ideas? Both why, how to reboot and what the issue is?
The HP DV series or laptop are known to suffer from GPU faults and issues. The syptoms you describe indicate such a fault. To help isolate the fault you will need to try plugging the laptop into an external screen when it is powered off, Power the laptop up and if the GPU is healthy it should display fine on the external screen leaving us free to look at other issues. If it does not it likely your GPU is at fault. If this is the case you would either need to undertake re-ball/reflow repair on the GPU, which is best done by you local repair shop unless you have the tools/skills to perform such tasks. Alternatively replacing the mainboard in the laptop could be an option.
Let me know if you try an external monitor. If it does display I will try to guide you through testing for other faults and issues.
