Playstation 2 Problem

I asked this question before, however the question I asked wasn't enough detail. I have several games, I am able to play one of them but not the others. What is going on?

I cannot get the covers off.

  • ejbarrows20 Jan 20, 2009

    How do I do this?

  • ejbarrows20 Jan 20, 2009

The Discs do play on other playstations. It seems that the games that don't play have a silver underside, the ones that play have a purple or blue underside.

  • ejbarrows20 Jan 20, 2009

tried opening it up but can't get the bottom away from the machine.

  • ejbarrows20 Jan 20, 2009

Tried blowing to clear it out and this didn't work.

  • ejbarrows20 Jan 20, 2009

no i'm doing this and its not working. there is no need to be rude.

I had this same problem when I was a soldier stationed in Iraq. As you can imagine, there is a lot of dust and heat in Iraq. I think we had to go through 3 playstations while I was stationed there. The dust wasn't smooth, it was gritty and ruined disks and lenses. I would have to agree with everyone above and say that you may have a dirty lens. The fact that black plays and the silver will not seems to be because black absorbs more light than silver. If the lens is dirty or scratched, it will have a better chance to read a black or dark colored disk than a silver one. On a side note, I also found out that if the disk doesn't spin up fast enough that there will be a read error also. You may have to open the unit like suggested above and clean the lens manually with a soft cloth. Make sure you get the dust too while your in there. I think I'm going to have to do this with my ps3 because my house is dusty.

To disassemble a PS2 you need to remove the 8 screws holding the cover.
Be very careful not to damage cables and ribbon connectors when you take the unit apart.

If the unit reads only certain disks, depending on surface, then it is a lens problem, try cleaning the lens with Qtips and isopropyl alcohol, or replace the lens pickup.

    One last hint,

when the PS read ony certain disks, and disks are fine on other consoles, then it is usually a lens problem.

Before taking apart the PS try a DVD lens cleaner like this one:

    JVC Cldvdlau Dvd Lens Cleaner

The lens inside needs to be cleaned. You can open your disc tray and blow inside a couple times. This usually always works. The lens get dusty and touchy. BLowing the dust of the lens is much easier than removing the cover and cleaning and yet has same outcome.

Make sure the bottom of the disc, are in good shape (no big, deep, large number of scratchs).
* Obviously they are playstation games...I hope you didn't miss that kind of mistake.
* Shouldnt HAVE to upgrade the software/firmware that's not a typical problem with store bought games.
* If they are copys of games if might not have been burnt properly, you need a special chip to play some copied games as well.

I don't see why it would play some games just fine, but others not at all if it was the laser. You would have the same problem with all games, so its the disc's themselves.

What game is it? It could be the CD. You can try to transfer the game to another disc (cd burn) then try it again.

You may have a dirty lens, or a fauly drive, generally our ps2 plays all dvds and games its supposed to. is it covered by warranty?

Posted on Jan 20, 2009

  • Ekse Jan 20, 2009

there are screws hidden, on those feet and other soft objects, under them, those plastic small covers on the screws come out.

  • Ekse Jan 20, 2009

there are quite a few screws, under those feet, all around the machine. you either have a dirty lens, or a fauly lens on the drive, just other fault in the drive, generally clean the lens or replace the drive, some shops sell the lens but might be better to replace the whole drive if its not working.

My sony play station 2 plays game cd's with play station 2 label games cd's only. if game cd's with playstation or any other local playstation 2 labels it displays " Incert playstation 2 format disc". How...

Hi Keshav,

The PlayStation 2, like the original PlayStation, incorporates circuitry to prevent the playing of copied or out-of-region discs and programs produced by people who are not paying percentage to the Sony Corporation (unlicensed games etc.). User response to this - grey market for modchips. PS2 Mod-Chips when installed, bypass the checks and allow the copied CD-R and DVD-R backup discs to run.

Obviously the installation of mod-chips in PlayStation 2 consoles is widely discouraged by Sony -- the reason is piracy. You must know that Sony has overlaid a seal onto each of their PS2 consoles. If this seal is broken (thus providing evidence that the console has been opened and "modded"), Sony will refuse to repair the system. On the other hand if your console is more than one yer old and no longer covered by the manufacturer warranty you should not worry about fraking the seal -- it will not change anything.

It can be done spending around few $15 to $20 i guess.

I own a PS2 which is modded before a year and still it works with out any trouble. You can ask if u have any questions about PS2.
Thank you, Thyagu.A

My son purchased a Playstation 2 game that's in Japanese. Do they make a format disk, so that my son can play the game on a U.S. Playstation 2 ?

you can either go to your local game store and ask if they have a copy or there some programs that create backup files of the game and than you can burn them on to a normal DVD of CD-Rom and play it on your playstation 2.

Playstation 2 Disc Read Error

After extensive research on this subject and working on several Playstation II systems. I found out the reason your system will play only blue disks and not silver is a alignment problem with the laser. It could be tilted or set to high or low. The quickest solution is to call Sony and get a new laser with the shuttle. If i am not mistaken it cost 50.00 and just go to the playstation site select support and it will explain in full detail how to take your system apart and replace the laser and shuttle.
