To solve this Code 39 error, follow these instructions:
NOTE: After removing these registry keys and rebooting, it may be necessary to reinstall any CD or DVD recording applications.
1) Close all open programs

2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter

3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders

  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  • SYSTEM
  • CurrentControlSet
  • Control
  • Class
  • {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
4) This folder is the DVD/CD-ROM Drive Class Description in the registry. Look for any of the following names in the right hand column.
  • UpperFilters
  • LowerFilters
  • UpperFilters.bak
  • LowerFilters.bak
5) If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose Delete

6) After deleting the keys, close the Registry Editor

7) Reboot your computer

8) Open My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. You may also want to open Device Manager and verify that the yellow exclamation and error code on the CD or DVD drive is gone

found this while doing a search of google.com
hope it works for you!!!

My cd rom drive does not read disks or download software on my computer, it sometimes freezes my computer up and wont restart properly. How can I fix this problem? I have a Dell studio 1535.

You could try any of these steps to check if it could help.

1.) Try to check if your discs would be read in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking. To do so, you can go by pressing F8 at startup and selecting the appropriate option from there. If it does work, then definitely there's a software that's causing the issue on your optical drive. If not, let's move on.

2.) Try to remove upper and lower filters. Depending on your operating system, the steps needed would vary, but I would suggest that you just use Microsoft's Fix-It Utility.

3.) If you have Dell's OEM Operating System disc or their drivers "Resource Disc", you could also try to boot off of it to try to check your CD drive's functionality. To do so, go to F12 during startup [e.g. when the Dell logo comes up] and select the option to boot from the CD/DVD/CDRW drive. That would give you a clear indicator on whether your CD drive is still functional or not since it would not be affected by any software application.

Hello and Welcome to Fixya.

Seems like you're having a software issue that prevents your system to read/run a disc when inside the operating system. I have included the official fix from Microsoft:

DVD Drive Troubleshooting

All you have to do is to click on "Run Now" and follow the on screen prompts - just remember to eject any CD that you may have inside the drive.

Please note that if this does not work, then the drive needs to be replaced. You may contact dell in case that happens.

Hope this helps and Thanks for using FixYa.

Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39) Laptop Levono y530, device dvd rw optiarc AD-7580s I tried to uninstall & reinstall it, but...

Give this a whirl:
CD-Rom stops working. After checking device manager you find an exclamation mark on the drive. It doesn't mean the drive is dead. It could be an upperfilter or lowerfilter registry issue that is keeping you from accessing the cd drive.

This fix worked for my client:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip

Also, try this fix from microsoft.

CD-ROM access is missing and messages cite error code 31, code 32, code 19, code 39, or code 41.

Try this before replacing the drive and remember that you may have to reinstall some burning software.

Code 39 for dvd drive

You can solve this problem by going to start, then run, type regedit. open hkey_local_machine, then system, then control, then class, then 4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318, once in this go over to the right hand side and delete upper filters and then lower filters. restart your computer and your dvd/cd-rom drive will work properly, if you look in device manager there will no longer be a question mark and it will tell you all is working correctly.
