First thing I would check is the power supply, easiest way to test it is to just swap the power supply with a working one.
That's easier said than done if you're just an average user so unless you've got an extra power supply handy then I would suggest finding a local computer repair shop that provides FREE DIAGNOSTICS, most do these days. Have them check out the system. It's either the power supply or motherboard. HOPEFULLY it's just the power supply though ;)
If the repair shop says it is the power supply I'd sincerely thank them for their time (5 minutes) and then I'd buy a replacement power supply and install myself ($15-25)

The most likely cause is a failing power supply. Unless you have a tester you will need to buy a replacement. Check the specs and order a suitable replacement. (www.newegg.com is my choice)
If any of this goes past your computer knowledge take your computer to an expert to examine first-hand.
