SOURCE: Whirlpool top Loading washing machine won't spin on spin cycle

If the washer won't finish a spin cycle, it probably means that your timer went bad or stalled. You can take the control panel off and look at the contacts for scorching or corrosion.

SOURCE: Agitator Not Working

My Hotpoint VBXR1090B top loading washing machine quit spinning during the rinse cycle and also quit agitating. The water filled up and drained just fine --no leaks.
Here's how I fixed it in 5-minutes.
Tools:

  1. Putty knife
  2. Nut driver - I used a multi-purpose screwdriver without any heads attached.
Procedure:
  1. Unplug washer from the electrical outlet for safety
  2. Release two spring clips holding the front panel on: Insert a putty knife 5" in from the side between the top and the front panel. Pull the front panel forwards.
  3. Unscrew 2 screws holding the top down.
  4. Lift top - it's somewhat hinged in the rear with three tabs inserted in control panel.
  5. The little red tab at the end of the lid switch should be between the lip of the opening and the top; not sitting on top of the lip as mine was.  It's thin enough steel to push it with your bare hands.
  6. Make sure when the lid closes it actually causes the switch to turn on. You should hear a click.
  7. Put everthing back together. Plug washer back in. Put your tools away.
  8. Voilà. Done. Easy.  Even a woman or a ****** could do it.

SOURCE: Washer won't agitate or spin out.

Well it is ethier Belt, Cluch ,motor ,Or transmission. But it does sound like your transmission . The loud clunk is the brake in the gear case ( Trans.). It might have broken off.

I have a GE, 4 to 5 years old, Super Capacity WJRR4170G1WW. When it agitates, the drum goes back and forth with the agitator. I though it should stay still. Please advise.

sorry to say you have a very expensive to repair problem ):
the transmission has a brake built into which is suppose to hold the tub in place during the agitation cycle and then release on the spin cycle to spin. the brake isnt engaging and the only fix is to replace the transmisson which is very expensive.
it may work for awhile then as it gets worse and the tub moves more during the wash cycle water will slosch out of it all over the floor, sorry to break the bad new

Amana Washer LW4303W. Tub spins much to freely while the agitator agitates. Could be coincidental but this problem seems like this all started after I replaced the drive belt. Washer cycles like it...

Yes, there is a brake that holds the tub while the machine is agitating. I don't have a manual handy for that model, but you probably have a plastic pulley in the center bottom of the machine. The brake is above that. There is a cam arrangement inside the pulley that will disengage the brake when in spin.

Maytag Performa washer drum turns with agitator. Also the brake doesn't stop the drum at end of cycle or when cover lifted.

The first thing to check is the clutch. It's supposed to lock the inner tub and drive the transmission (agitator) when the motor turns in one direction, and spin the tub when the motor turns in the other direction. It's also possible the agitator drive shaft coming out of the transmission and the concentric tub drive shaft are frozen together (worst case) - this is usually caused by a bad bearing seal allowing water to leak into the shaft.

Lifting the lid during the spin cycle should disconnect power to the motor - maybe what you see is the tub continuing to spin because the transmission is acting as a flywheel. Either that, or the lid switch actuator is not working properly.

Drum spinning during wash cycle

if when in the wash cycle the tub spins then the brake in the cluch assembly is worn and to be replaced. this holds the tub from moving when in the wash cycle. thanks tallpaul

Agitator not turning during cycle

Well, it sounds like you've done your homework. My first suspect would have been the agitator dogs too, but you said they were fine. Another likely suspect would have been the motor coupler, but you said the washer spins during the spin cycle. If the coupler was bad the unit would fill, but wouldn't agitate or spin. Plus, it would make an awful noise. I would have also suspected a clutch assembly, but you said the wash tub can spin. Normally, when the clutch goes bad, the drum won't spin, or spins slow. Another suspect could have been a bad lid switch, but the washer would have filled and stopped, without agitating or spinning. The only remaining suspect that I'm aware of is the gear case (transmission). Checking under the washer can give you some clues. Normally, when a gear case starts to go bad, they leak an amber colored oil. You may find puddles or drips under the washer. If you see no signs of oil the gear case could still be defective, however. But, before you go through all the trouble, double check the agitator one more time. Completely remove it from the tub and check the under side to ensure the grooves that grip the top of the gear case shaft have not been worn smooth. I hope this may have been some help to you.
