Download the BartPE bootable iso and burn it on to a CD:

http://www.download.com/BartPE-Bootable-Live-Windows-CD-DVD/3000-2094_4-10611131.html

It has some nice data recovery softwares. Boot using the CD and run the data recovery software(s) and you should mostly be able to get your data back - save it to your other hard disk.

You can also get some free software data recovery tools from:

You won't lose your data,

When I look in disk manager it shows my external hard drive is in raw

DO NOT FORMAT YOUR DISK. It has been damaged; how easy or even possible to recover your data depends on the degree of damage.
Try your HD in another computer; if it works, make a back-up of your files on another disk.
To understand what RAW format means, try this
http://www.ehow.com/facts_7167186_raw-disk-format_.html
or look for it in Wikipedia.
By searching the internet ("raw disk has data on it"), the first article I found was this
http://html5.litten.com/how-to-fix-external-disk-drive-suddenly-became-raw/
which may be of some help.
In that article a Linux system is used to read and modify the disk. There other tools for repairing this type of fault, for example, http://www.easeus.com/resource/recover-raw-disk.htm
(I do not know if this free:: the information in the article is certainly free though)
Recovering your files will probably mean a lot reading, research and time, but you might be lucky. I recommend reading any article you are going to use through to the end before you start with it.

Around 4 gb ?
In the Microsoft Windows operating system, you can copy and paste 5 GB files as long as you have enough disk drive space.

The disk drive to which you're pasting the file must be formatted using the New Technology File System (NTFS), which supports the copying and pasting of very large files.

Purchase a large capacity USB external hard disk drive from a reputable vendor.
Make sure that the hard disk drive is at least 100 GB.

Connect the external hard disk drive to a spare USB port in your computer. Wait for the Windows operating system to recognize the hard disk drive.

Double-click on the "Computer" icon on the Windows Desktop, after which a window will appear listing all of your disk drives. Establish the letter of the new hard disk drive you have just installed. For the purpose of this article, the drive letter is assumed to be "E."

Right-click on drive "E," click on "Format," change the file system to "NTFS," then click on the "Start" button. Wait for the process to complete.

Click on the 5 GB+ file to select it, then press "Ctrl" + "C" on your keyboard to copy the file to the Windows Clipboard.

Click on the "Computer" icon on the Windows Desktop, then double-click on the "E" drive. This will open the root folder of the hard disk drive in the same window.

Press "Ctrl" + "V" on your keyboard to paste the 5 GB+ file from the Windows Clipboard to the new hard disk drive. Wait for the process to complete, which will take several minutes.

When e-mailing or archiving huge files, it sometimes helps to cut them into smaller pieces.
Fast File Saw & Joiner does exactly that, and puts the pieces back together, too.

Do this external hard drive works for mac

It should work OK.
If you want to exchange data between a PC and a MAC then then hard disk will need to be formatted on a PC in FAT32 file system. if you only want to use this hard disk on a MAC then you can format the hard disk with your MAC in HPFS file system.

External hard disk WD 500gb icon absent in my computer window?

Turn the computer off without the external hard drive being plugged in.
plug the external hard drive in a usb port, power up, the systems post boot up will find the drive and inform windows what hardware is installed.
When windows boots up, it will look at all the hardware and find the external hard drive, when windows finishes booting up you should be able to see the drive in my computer.

If you can't access your files, data recovery software can help.I used this one called Tenorshare Data Recovery to retrieve files off crashed HDD and it worked. Get it from http://www.any-data-recovery.com
If needed, you can download it and scan your hard drive for free to preview whether your files can be recovered.

My toshiba 1 tb hard drive all ofa suddn says that i need to format it and i have alot for stuff on it that i need how can i make it work again

Don't be panic. you can try some data recovery software. You can see
http://www.asoftech.com/adr/
It tells the steps how to perform data recovery.

If above does not work, you may have to format the hard drive (use quick format), and then use above mentioned software to scan again the hard drive and recover your files.

You can check if your external hard drive is detected by the BIOS during bootup. You can also check this by Right click on taskbar > properties > startmenu > customize > advanced > scroll down completely and select system administration tools "Display on the all programs menu" > ok. Click on start > all programs > administrative tools > computer management > double click on storage. click on disk management(local) here you should see your lacie. If you dont then the drive is probably not detected. If you see, you can just partition it from here and it will appear in your my computer. If it is indeed detected, you will have to use a application like Recover my files to recover your data and then partition and format the drive.
