Question about Pentair 1.0 Hp Whisperflo Pump

1 Answer

I have a 2HP Whisperflo pump on my 25,000 gallon pool. The pool has been there for 2 seasons and I am on my 3rd pump. I am ordering a new motor for that one.The motor is making a lagging noise like it

This pump was put in last May by my pool company under warranty. The pump runs year round with a Pentair Controller on average of 18 hours a day during season and around 8 hrs a day off season. The check valve is working fine and there is always water in the sump when the pump is off.

SOURCE: Pool pump starts & stops on its own outside of programmed run

There are several potential problems:

  • freeze protection circuit causing pump to start - could be a bad outside air temperature sensor.
  • It is possible the new relay is bad.
  • There could be a short in the control wires to the relay
  • old programming shadow stuck in memory (not likely since you changed the boards)
Yes, the starting and stopping can harm your pump.

SOURCE: my pentair whisperflo is making a load squealing

When you have noise in the pump it is usually a rumbel or rattel. If you have a squealing it is probally in your motor and is more than likly a bad bearing. If you have any water leaking at your seal this is probally the problem and it will just get worse. Sorry to say you are very close to a new motor.

SOURCE: Pentair WhisperFlo Wiring Help

If you just bought this then there will be a diagram on the motor nameplate and/or under the terminal cover where you connect the wires. Generally speaking, there are two wires inside the motor that change positions depending on 115 or 230 v connection. If one of the wires is on a post common to one of the line leads, that usually means you have the motor set for 115V. Is that the voltage you are supplying to the motor? If there is no diagram you can make out on the motor, post what brand motor and the motor model number for a diagram.

You don't want to swim in water that has algae... 1st ...Make sure you have the correct amount of salt. See you manual for amount needed. Must set you pump timer first and sync your chlorinator between that time, if pump turns off before chlorinator cycle ends, you will get an "Low flow" alarm. Set you pump timer to run 12 hours and the chlorinator for 10 to 11 of those hours and should see results within 3 days or so. After that, If you live in an area that is hot, 10 hours pump and 8 to 9 chlorinator... Hope this helps...

I have to agree that someone is definitely looking for Christmas cash! The full retail from the Manufacturer (MSRP) is only $650.00 and you can locate this part online from anywhere from $288.00 top $359.00. Labor should be 1 -1.5 hours to install. Our book rate at WeFixUglyPools.com is $535.00 installed for this part. You might consider calling around or ordering the part and having someone come out and just charge hourly for the install.
Pentair Warrants their heaters and heater parts for a period of 2 years, so if you are within your 2 year period, you are in luck! There is an exception to this, however. If you have built the pool recently, or purchased 3 separate pieces of equipment (i.e.; Pump, filter and heater) then you will find that your warranty on ALL your Pentair items is extended to 3 years from the manufacturer. If you have 3 pieces of Pentair Equipment: Call Pentair Tech Support and ask them to e-mail you document P3-160L.pdf (or click on the link provided).
Several things can cause a circuit board to go bad: electrical surges, moisture, or rodents. It is always better to have someone out that understands the heaters and can fully diagnose your failure, but it is great that you though enough about the price presented to see advice elsewhere...now take some of the money and put it in your own Christmas Stocking!

You run a pool pump based on pumping volume compared to pool volume and long enough to turn the water over frequently enough to keep it balanced and clear.

You should have no need to run it 24 hours a day to accomplish that since the pool is indoors and safe from the effects of weather and sunlight.

What you will want to do is determine the minimum amount of time then the pump needs to operate to keep the water balanced and clear based on fill water makeup, your chemical choices and bather loads and then set the timer to run the system for that amount of time and the pump for the speed required.

If you really want to be sure you are as efficient as possible you will need to look at the pump curve for your exact model and look for the point on the curve the pump is most efficient at, speed/volume wise and run it at that setting for the time you find thru experience mentioned above. That way the pump moves the most water it can at it's most efficient point for as little time as is required to keep the pool clean.

I hope I worded that in a way that makes sense.

Not sure how long to run pump

First, RECYCLE is a position that allows water to continue to circulate through the system, BYPASSING the filter. If there is a problem with the system, like an air intrusion/leak, by putting the filter in RECYCLE you can determine if the problem is in the filter, or another part, of your system.

As for how long to run the pump, it can be ran 24 hours a day. Normally, the average run time is 8 to 10 hours a day. Most city codes require that pool water is "turned over" one time daily. This means that all of the water in the pool is ran through the filter at least once a day. Usually, 8 to 10 hours will give you that requirement.

Hope this helps!

Pentair pool pump vs 3050

These pumps should not be hooked into an intermatic mechanical timer. It should always have power supplied to it, meaning it should be installed to the line side of the power supply. Scheduling is done either in pump itself or thru an external controller such as a suntouch or easytouch controller, etc. When you have it wired into a timer like intermatic, power is interupted to the pump every day when the timer setting is for off. It is very hard on the drive of this pump, it does not like it, and will shorten the life of the drive. The pump was designed to always have power supplied to it, even when it is not scheduled to run. This may be the problem you are experiencing. HTH
