Question about Honeywell Electronic Programmable Heat/Cool Thermostat - CT3300A100 Heater

1 Answer

What would cause a burning electrical smell in house? Woke up to an electrical burning smell in my house. Smell was in the bedroom but mostly in the great room where the heater is located, it is an electric AC with heatstrips. I checked all of the lamps that are plugged in and computer wiring. The smell lasted about 2 hours after I woke up not sure how long it had been smelling like that prior to waking. The heater did not come on today but I think it was on this morning. The smell has dissipated and is unnoticeable now. It has been 12 hours. Is this something to be concerned about?

SOURCE: Honeywell Electric Baseboard Heater thermostat

You need to take the wires off the thermostat. And touch the red and white wire together. If the heater works then you need a new thermostat, if it does not work then you need a new ignitor. It all depends on the t-stat. Dont worry about the wires there are not enough volts to hurt you. It is milli volts so just touch them together and the unit should fire up

Have an electrician come out and check your wiring. If there is a burning smell you probably have a short in your wiring. This is very dangerous and can cause a fire burning down your house and burning up all of your possessions.

I just bought a Holmes 16 inch stand fan HSF1610A I only use it to sleep. Only have had it for about 2-3 weeks. I have not had a problem with it til I woke up this morning to it not working. It still...

First smell the fan, If you get burning smell then you need to send it for warranty repairs or to a repair shop. If no burning smell then check the electric cable for connectivity. Most probably it has gone bad and it's easy to repair. For checking it you need a electrical tester or multimeter.

I have just lit a coal fire for the first time in the living room, all is OK ecept when I went into the bedroom (2 floors above) I could smell smoke quite badly Any advice?

The chimney needs to be 3 feet taller than the highest point of the house . If you are running the clothes dryer, bathroom vent fan, or exaust hood in kitchen it makes a vacum in the house that can draw smoke into the house down the chimmney . I think when you burn wood or coal in a house it is pretty hard not to be able to smell it. Our house and clothes do not smell like smoke any more since we stopped burning wood.

Dryer part, smells burnt and is extremely loud

If you notice a burningsmell in your washing machine, the cause could be any number of things. Regardless, this is one smell you shouldn't ignore. It's important to quickly diagnose the problem and find the solution.
The "Burning Belt" Smell

Older, top-loading washing machines use a belt drive to transport energy from the motor to the transmission and pump. The belt can prevent costly repairs to the motor or transmission by slipping, stretching, or breaking if there is a malfunction in the machine. If the belt slips, stretches, or breaks, it can cause friction and a burning smell, most likely a burning "rubber" smell.

The solution is actually quite simple: you need to replace the drive belt on your washing machine. You can call a repairperson or, if your washer is under warranty, the manufacturer. If you or someone you know is handy, you can replace the belt yourself. The belt is located either from the back access panel or from the underside of the washer.

Most new washing machine models are "direct drive." This means they do not use a belt. The motor is directly connected to the transmission. If you have a direct drive machine and your washer smells like it is burning, read on.
Electrical Problems

If your washer smells and you have a direct drive machine, it may be the motor, transmission, or both. If these are shot on your washing machine, the result may be an electrical burning smell. Both are necessary to run your washing machine and can be costly to repair. The first thing to do if you notice an "electrical" smell in your washing machine and not a "rubber" burning smell, is to unplug the machine and call the manufacturer or a repairperson.

An electrical burning smell may also be caused by a water leak coming into contact with electrical wiring. Both are major concerns and should be addressed immediately. A water leak can cause structural damage in your home and can short out the electrical wiring in your washer and cause additional damage to the machine.
Other Causes

Another more likely cause of a burning smell in your washer is overloading. Adding too many clothes to your washing machine can stress the motor or transmission, causing them to overheat or malfunction and emit a burning smell. For top load washers, overloading can cause the agitator to freeze or malfunction, stressing the drive belt and causing friction, which could emit a burning rubber smell.

To prevent overloading, know the size of your washer. They are measured in cubic feet. In addition, know how many towels, pants, shirts, and other items you can safely load. When it doubt, do smaller loads. Not only will this prevent overstressing the machine, it will also ensure clothes are thoroughly cleaned and rinsed.

The unit works as of right now...but there is a smell of something burning

Quite often, if you smell like a plastic burning smell, one of the capacitors is faulty, and should be checked immediately. Quite often the compressor start capacitor, will get hot and start to melt. Have it checked by qualified technician or electrician, as they are dangerous and can give a fatal shock if not experienced with handling them, even when power is shut off. $20-$30 part, and 1/2hr. labor should take care of it. The cover on roof unit, has to be removed to access the capacitors, so watch for bees, wasps, when you do so. Make sure power is off at breaker panel.

Electrical burning smell in house

Mhenn, It is my guess that the 'electrical burning' smell is from your heating system. Since there is no smoke and the walls are not warm.... then there is no real problem. The smell maybe just dust has collected in the duct work that is burning off the central heating systems electrical heat strips. If you have electrical heat strips then that may be the problem. If you have a central gas heat system, it may be the same type problem. Hope this helps you. Henry

Bad smell from ac unit in my house

does it smell like literally , dirty socks?if so it is dirty sock syndrome, a plague of heat pumps for years. if it smells like an electrical melting or burning of wires then time to call a pro.it could be a weak capacitor or a weak fan motor. if it is dirty sock syndrome then its the microbes that thrive when temps are middle temps and reproduce when temps are hot and cold in intermittent days. hot one day and cold the next equals call for cool then call for heat and hot steam from heated coils cause s bacteria to grow and microbes to spread across coil. when you switch back it causes the smell.if the coil is clean you can spend a chunk of money on sanitizers but best bet is to run it cool for hot weather and hot for cool weather. the transitional periods are what create the smell. avoid semi cool and semi hot periods. this condition is common to acs from all brands . lots of stuff on the internet about dirty sock syndrome
