Keep motor from turning over

I have a TB20cs trimmer and the cord broke. My question is, how can you keep the motor from turning over while taking the "star" screw out of the main housing unit?

May be air filter but sounds more like your muffler is stopped up. First take the muffler off and see if it runs better without it. If so, burn the carbon out of the muffler and clean the muffler port on the engine. If not, then remove the four screw at the very end and disassemble. The ait filter is in that area. SOURCE: TB20CS gas trimmer, primmer bubble won't pull in gas

The carburator has a sereis of one way check valves that get cloged very easily.
If you remove the carburator and clean it out with a simple cleaning solution you should be able to clean it up.Do not use compressed air.

SOURCE: Where can we find help

You will need to look at page 9 of the manual here. The string head installs part by part on the end of the driveshaft. If you are having trouble with the driveshaft turning while attempting to put the head on, post back. You shouldn't though if the end of the shaft's threads are in good shape. If you need to, spray some WD-40 on it prior to installation. Here is the manual.

Edging when heard a loud pop like a spring or cable broke while running at high rpm's, engine shut down.....now starter cord pulls freely. what's wrong?

Hi William:
This is fun because it's already broken so you can't easily make it worse.
I'd start by making a clear spot on the workbench and then start taking it apart. Label the parts, keep them organized, and maybe even take a few pictures as you progress.
Think of it as fun. Every bit you remove has a purpose, so try to check the functions as you go. When something doesn't do what you think it should, you've probably found the problem.

My Troy built string trimmer starts, the shaft turns the head but not fast enough to trim the grass, plus the string heads has stopped all together on numerous times?

Hello, if it's a split shaft, or sometimes called a convertible, you may need to pull out the flex shaft to make sure its not broke. I re lube it with anti sieze then put back together. Not saying its a different problem, but this fixed mine witch sounds familiar.

ReplaCE pull cord on tb20cs troybuilt weedeater

This repair procedure will involve some time and labor and is somewhat detailed. You basically have to strip the unit right down to the motor and crankshaft to get at the recoil unit. TORX fasteners are used exclusively on these units and without this type of tools, you won't be able to remove any of the parts and covers to get there. And once you get there you have to know how to preload the starter spring with no pull rope in it so it will draw the new rope you are installing into the recoil...that procedure is not to bad with some help...getting to that point is all the fun!

Primer Ball Sticking

Your carburetor needs cleaned. Disassemble the carb. and spray with carb. cleaner. Use a Den Tek Brush,(http://www.dentek.com/shop.php?target=products&product_id=7), to clean the small portals in the carb. Make sure that the small screen in the carb. is free of debris. Test the primer bulb after you get the carb reassebled and before you put it back on the trimmer. This will keep you from doing extra work.
If you need further assistance, just let me know.

I have a Troy Bilt TBP6040 XP 4 cycle weed eater with the spring assist starting. The pull cord broke and I am trying to replace it but I can't seem to get the cord to go all the way back in. I need help....

I just had this same issue. I found out that you have to take the cord out of the handle then put the spool in. You then rotate the spool back in and align the spool with the spring and fish out the cord which will put a small amout of tension on it. You keep the tension on it and put the handle back on.
