Acer desktop power button faillure and STOP: c00021a BSOD problem

Since about one week my acer desktop does not start instantly when pushing the powerbutton. At first it took about 10 seconds to start, by now it takes at least half a minute to start. Today the problem got worse. A BSOD appeared at first with a ntos kernel error, after a restart, a STOP: c000021a error appeared. The error occurs when the initial phase of starting Windows 7 is ongoing. I can see the colored dots, but halfway their dance, the screen turns black and nothing happens anymore. I ran several times the win7 repair tool but that did not solve the problem. I.e. halfway the repair program the screen turns black and nothing seems to happen anymore. My system is a Core i7, 10 Gb RAM, 1 Tb Main (bootup) HD, 250 Gb SSD with Windows 7 x64 (the SSD drivers run from the Main HD). Possibly both problems are not related, but since they occur more or less in a logical sequence I suppose they are in a way related. Any one an idea what causes this and / or how to solve this?

The problem is not solved yet, but to give an update on the path I go. After trying several solutions or suggested solutions I concluded that one of the issues is related to the graphics card (AT Radeon 4560) and/or its driver. Taking a closer look at the component, I noticed that all cooling channels where cloacked by a thick layer of dust. Just blowing did not do the trick so I removed the card and screwed of the fan. After thorow cleaning and adding new cooling paste, reassembled the piece and reinstalled in the computer. This helped to get me further into the startup, even up to the point where I could startup more or less normally in safe mode. I deinstalled the graphics drivers and restarted in normal mode. hurray... :-( for a short while. I could rum everything, as it should so thought I had the problem solved, unfortunately that was not the case,. When I perform a restart from the win startmenu, all seems to be OK. When I quit the machine and try to restart, nothing happens??? Not even a fan moves. I can see the network connection blink, the mainboard power light is on, but however long I push the start button, nothing happens. I checked my CMOS battery, this is OK. Only when draining power button (disconnect power cable, hold pwr btn for 5 secs, till mobo power light is off) the machine starts up. Who has tips where to look for solving this?

The overheating may have fried a component/components, PSU? Get some Electronic Contact Cleaner Spray and start cleaning the contacys on the Memory, All PCI cards, power connections ....etc. A few Can's of Compressed Air and A little housekeeping goes a long way

Problem seems to be solved! As mentioned in the previous comment I cleaned all dust from the inside of the computercase. Then I deassembled both GPU as CPU cooling fans, cleaned them thoroughly added new cooling paste and reassembled them. After restarting the computer the problem was partly solved, though the startbutton refused to work as it should :-(. After I managed to start the computer (by removing the powercord, keep the startbutton pushed for approx 20 seconds, then reconnect power) I fully removed the graphics card driver (ATI 45xx series) and all related applications, then restarted and have windows find the basic driver available within the Windows installation. Windows seemed to function OK but Windows update tried to install an update for the graphics driver and then again, problems occurred :-(. Restarted, removed graphics driver again, restarted and let Windows reinstall original driver, then set driver off. I then tested several versions of the driver for the card. Finaly the latest Win7/Win8 driver for this card proved to work as it should :-). And to my surprise the powerbutton problem is solved with this newest graphics card driver ?... It looks like the graphics card plays a role in starting the machine.... and for some - to me mysterious - reason depends on settings influenced by the Windows driver for the card. I tested this by removing the graphics card -> the machine does not start at all when there is no graphics card installed, no beep, no fan, no blinking lights, nothing. Putting the card back -> starting as it should. Installing the Windows default driver -> power button reacts only after 20 - 40 seconds...? Reinstalling the latest ATI driver -> powerbutton acts immediately.

Can you do a system restore/recovery? Try boot to "last known good configuration" ? Have you added any new hardware or software?

Max, Thanks for your reply. I have tried to reinstall a previous version, did not solve :-(. I have not added any software or hardware lately. The restore procedure ends in a black screen.... I am going to try to start an Ubuntu environment to test memory and HD's for physical hardware problems. Hope I can find the cause. Other suggestions are welcome!

SOURCE: windows XP won't load - black screen

Refresh all the connection on your motherboard like ATX power supply, HDD and CD/DVD ROM cables, and specially the RAM. You may have to clean the RAM as shown in the image below. c4d62f6.jpg
then hopefully your computer will return to normal. Hope this helps.

I can not get the web cam to work

Instructions1 Take pictures independent of communications software on the Windows version of the netbook by using the webcam without connecting to networking software. Click the "Windows Start" menu and click "Acer Crystal Eye Webcam" in the Programs list. The webcam application should open and the camera should produce an initial warmup image. More than likely a virus or a video card. Hopefully the video card because if it is a virus then you will have to replace the hard drive. Hope this helps

Capture the message that is displayed on the BSOD. There will be a bunch of numbers that will tell you what is wrong. I would open the side and re-seat the RAM and do a general cleaning of the fans.

Most likely your laptop is going into sleep mode. Lots of them do not like sleep mode if nothing happens when you push the power button try to hold it down for about 5 sec. your computer should power off and then you can start as normal. If this problem persists change the options in your control panel to turn sleep mode off. That should solve it.
