A) Replacement LCD screen backlight could be bad.
Happens. Sometimes you get a bad part. (Bad LCD screen assembly, in this case)

LCD screen may not be the correct one.

A screen Inverter, and an LCD screen; are a MATCHED unit.

B) Screen Inverter:
May be bad, or the Wrong one

C) You may not have the screen Inverter, connected correctly to the Backlight.
Connections aren't tight.

D) The Display Cable TO LCD screen connection may not be tight, or correctly connected.

I know the display shows graphics, but a poor connection of Display Cable to LCD screen, can make the Backlight dim out.

I'm betting it is a poor connection, or the wrong screen Inverter, or wrong LCD screen.

joecoolvette

(Be shame to kick that laptop to the curb. Nice laptop)

SOURCE: Okay, so I had a customer come in with this laptop

When the LCD is black and you can see a dim image on the screen then it is a black light problem. could be a faulty inverter but mosr likely a burnt out/worn out CCFL lamp. By connecting and external monitor to the video port, you can determine weather the video card is OK.
If you don't get an image on an external monitor then the video card is faulty and it is impossible to repair except by replacing the motherboard.

SOURCE: Coil Part Number for Gateway MT3707 Inverter Board

Hi

Thnak you for your query

You will have to replace the WHOLE inverter board, not just part of it

The inverter is responsible for taking 12V supply and converting the power to a higher volatage to allow the screen to light up

I would suggest that you book the laptop into a reputable PC shop to complete the repair

If this has been useful please leave postive feedback/vote/testimonial - Thank You Again

White screen appears at start up

A laptop suffering from a blank screen can fully impede all computer productivity, but fortunately there are a number of common problems that you can swiftly troubleshoot for in your own home, even if you have no prior computer troubleshooting experience. The power adapter, monitor brightness settings, inverter cable or otherwise may all be possible causes for your screen's problems, but all can be repaired with only a Phillips screwdriver and a potential replacement screen.

Check the power adapter of the laptop and ensure that it is still properly plugged into the back of the machine. Check the monitor brightness settings for your screen. There are dedicated monitor brightness keys on the keyboard, typically located just above the numeric keys. If the brightness has accidentally been turned all the way down, this will result in a screen that appears completely dark or blank. Turn the brightness up. Open up your display to check on the backlight's functioning. Remove the screws that run around the bezel, or perimeter, of your laptop's screen. Use a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the bezel carefully off the display, starting at one corner and working around the bezel until it is completely detached. Find the inverter board, which will now be visible with the bezel removed. It lies at the bottom of the screen. A black inverter cable connects into this board via a connector that lies atop the board. This cable is instrumental to the operation of the screen's backlight, so if the cable has come loose, then the backlight will fail to function and the screen will be dark and blank. Reconnect the inverter cable into the connector by inserting it and then snapping the connector down into the flat, "locked" position, which will put it parallel to the inverter board. Consider full replacement of the screen if the inverter cable fix does not restore the screen's proper operating state. Ensure the inverter cable is disconnected, then remove the metal brackets on either side of the screen. These brackets are held in place with two screws that must be removed with your Phillips screwdriver. Pull the laptop's screen slowly up and out. Slide in the replacement screen, then restore the screen brackets and reconnect the inverter cable. Slide the bezel back into place over the display and replace the bezel screws. Hope this helps

My Philips X58 Freevents laptop's screen has stopped lighting up, however I can just see that there are my programmes on the screen if I shine a torch onto it. Can you advise the fault and how best...

A faint and barely visible image on the screen indicates that the backlight(s) that illuminates the display isn't powering on. A device called an inverter board takes DC power from the laptop motherboard and converts it to AC power to power the screen backlight.
Before attempting anything below, be sure and remove the laptop battery and unplug the laptop
You need to take the screen apart and check to make sure that no cables are loose that are connected to the inverter board. If everything is secure, the next thing I would do is try to test the inverter board by hooking up an LCD from another laptop to the inverter and turning the laptop on to see if it lights up. If the other screen does light up, then the inverter board is likely good and your backlight needs to be replaced. Backlight replacement, unfortunately, can be very tricky for even an experienced technician, and many will opt to just replace the entire screen.
If you can't test the inverter board, then it might be worth it to order one and see if installing it fixes the problem.
Youtube is a great place to check for instructional videos on laptop repair, such as this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjXLR5yY7X4
Finally, if you can't or don't want to repair the display problem, then you can always hook an external monitor or a television up to the video port and use your laptop that way.

Good luck!

My screen has gone very dark - what do I need to do to brighten the screen

You don't give any information about your computer, and that makes it hard to give a precise answer. But if you have a laptop, or you're having this trouble with an LCD monitor on a desktop computer, the display backlight may have quit working. Without the backlight you can only very dimly see the display. The usual reason is that the inverter board (in a laptop) or power supply (desktop monitor) isn't working.

Laptop inverter boards are pretty simple to replace, and you can find them for most brands and models now at reasonable cost. Check eBay where there are many sellers. Once you have the replacement, you just need to remove the front bezel of the display, which usually means taking out screws at the corners and releasing snap tabs around the edges. The inverter board mounts below the display panel and there are two cables connected. Unplug the cables, remove the old inverter, put the new one in and reconnect the cables and you're done. The brightness should be back to normal. (It's also possible but less common for the backlight lamp in the LCD panel itself to be bad. While it is possible to replace the lamp it is very difficult to do. It's usually simpler and safer to replace the whole display panel, although they can be expensive.)

In a desktop monitor, bad capacitors in the power supply often cause the backlight to go out. Many sites show what bad capacitors look like and describe how to remove and replace bad ones. It's a more difficult repair than the laptop inverter replacement, involving soldering on the circuit board, but it's still something you might be able to yourself.

Good luck, and thanks for using FIxya!

I have an HP Pavillion DV4 laptop, when turned on the screen displays nothing. Ive been using my laptop by means of an external monitor.

You might have either a faulty LCD cable or screen inverter board.
The LCD cable transfers data signal from the motherboard & video card to the LCD screen. It also supplies high voltage DC power to the screen inverter board. The screen inverter board works as a power supply for the backlight lamp mounted inside the LCD screen. It converts low voltage DC power to high voltage AC power needed for the backlight lamp.

I have a Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook s7020 with no backlight. The display is showing everything but it's hard to see because there's no backlight. Everything is also fine with an external screen. I have a...

The Inverter board must be tested and eventually replaced. The inverter is the small board located at the base of display. This is connected to one side to the backlight lamp, to which supplies AC high voltage, and on the other side to motherboard, where receives DC voltage.

Inverter contacts to otherboard and to lamp must be tested , using a multimeter to read volts. The inverter is an AC board, and for safety reason the test must be done by a trained repairer.
If the inverter is OK check the contacts to motherboard and wiring harness to motherboard..

Also ensure that light is not just dimmer because energy save mode is on, or because the laptop is running on batteries.

Backlight wont stay on

The inverter board which provides the backlight power isn't working properly. This is a pretty common problem with LCD screens. The inverter is in the display, mounted under the display panel. It's a fairly simple job to replace the inverter. You have to remove the screws holding the front of the display to the back and separate the pieces. The inverter is held in place by a couple of screws and has a couple of cables connecting it to the main board and display panel. Unplug those, remove the inverter, mount the replacement and plug the cables back in. Then reassemble the display. A search on Google for "acer 5315 inverter" turned up several sources for the replacement part. Here is one. I don't know anything about this seller; I just picked it as an example.
