My 94 VW Golf After driving it a short time and turning it off after 10 to 15m i try start it and it will crank a fair few time before starting back up with black smoke. Any help will do thank you

Sounds like an indication of a rich fuel mixture. Check your air filter. The MAF sensor, oxygen sensor, ECM, fuel pressure regulator or injectors could cause the rich mixture. Have the vehicle scanned for codes and if possible read the operating values for the fuel trim and sensors. If sticking injectors are suspected you can remove spark plugs and see which has excessive carbon deposits.

Could it possibly be that you may have to much or not enough transmission oil or even water in your transmission being its an automatic transmission or maybe your clutch needs adjusting or replacement if its a manual/standard transmission

I would say you need to take your cat off and check to see if the monolith is blocked/broken up. The big puff and black smoke tell me you are getting a pressure build up, a blocked/broken up cat is the most likely cause of that.

Can be a bad O2 sensor. Check with a scanner which shows live data the 1-1 and 2-1 (upstream) sensors. Good sensors show a rapidly fluctuating voltage from 0.2 to 0.8 V. When the sensor has a steady voltage, then its most probably bad. There is no check engine light and no fault codes set?

Potiac fire bird starts hard.

Sorry but white smoke is a sign of water getting into 1 or more cylinders.I would pull the oil dipstick and see if it looks like a creamy color. If it does then you may have a blown head gasket or a crack in the engine block somewhere.

Loud knocking in engine with white smoke

Hi Tracey P, sounds like you have a TERMINAL problem! If this noise and smoke symptoms came on suddenly while driving, and your performance is impaired, then I would suggest you might well have lost one cylinder dur to component failure. That might be a piston breaking up, a valve dropping or perhaps a combination of the two. I would seriously suggest that it's time to remove the cylinder head/s to check what exactly the problem is.

well if it runs the carb is okay the smoke is just changes in how the carb loads up most of the time unless its not smoking all the time.and most mowers leak from around the dip stick or the crankshaft seals.hope this helps would be curious as to where the oil is coming from.good luck

Bad news. Depending on what your mileage is, you can have a burnt valve, sticking lifter, bad piston ring all on the right side of the engine. The blue smoke is burning oil. Oil from the crank case is being compressed up into the cylinder and being burned. You will have to get a compression check on that side of the engine. You check the compression one sparkplug at a time while the engine idles. A loss in compression will tell you what cylinder is failing.

Good luck and thanks for your question and I hope my suggestions help. burdfrenzy
