Sounds like a skinned wire on your front or rear limit switches is touching metal. Go over your low voltage wiring and test again.

It sounds like you have a logic board problem. If your remotes work at all it is not a programming problem. You could pull the logic board and check for loose connections especially around the small transformer. 18 years for an opener is very lucky. Their average life is about 1/2 that.

Have you tried the manufacturers site at either craftsman or sears. You should be able to find it there. You will need your model #.

You need first to get the correct model number of your opener. It is on the end of the opener closest to the garage door and starts with 139.
Then you can go to this site and download a free manual.

UNPLUG RHE UNIT WAIT ABOUT 5 MIN. AND PLUG IT BACK IN.
THIS RESETS THE SEQUENCER.
SOMETIMES IT WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
