    Thank you Blake. I agree that the problem is with the laptop as all other devices perform well with the router. I have tried enabliing the WLAN on it many times and even reinstalled the HP software but it remains that pressing the wi-fi button only changes betwween Off and Disabled and the button light remains amber.

You must start out by narrowing the problem down. Here are some things to try
First reset your router. If this fixes the issue you may need a new router. But it may not be a problem as long as you do not have to reset it often.

Try seeing if another system will connect to your network. If you have a smart phone most of them are able to connect over wifi. If this works then the issue is most likely with your laptop.

Take your system to somewhere with free wifi to see if it is able to connect there. If it is able to connect there then the problem must be with your home network and not your laptop. If it is with your home network then most likely the problem is the router.

Your problem may appear from a not properly enabled WLAN card.
Make sure the Wi-Fi swithc is in ON position and on your laptop keyboard try the FN+F8 combination to have displayed the wireless card status. The WLAN card has to be ENABLED to be able to connect to the Internet. The combination done will make appear on your display a window with some options available; choose that option that enables your wireless card.
Also check in your computer's DEVICE MANAGER if your WLAN card is working properly. To do so follow these simple steps:
1. START and click on SYSTEM;
2. in SYSTEM option click on DEVICE MANAGER;
3. on DEVICE MANAGER option go at NETWORK ADAPTERS and see if there your wireless card is indicated and it shows that it is working PROPERLY;
4. if an UNKNOWN DEVICE is indicated then try to find the right driver for you notebook model and WLAN card model;
5. install the driver then REBOOT and recheck in DEVICE MANAGER if your WLAN card is displayed properly this time.

It looks as though this is equipped with a Broadcom WLAN card. Try going to this link for HP/Compaq put in the required information for product number then click on software/driver downloads. then follow the steps for installing the driver. That should do the trick after a clean install of the operating system.

it does support the ethernet 10/100 cable, the Wan cable is basicly the same. you need to run my network from windows to access the internet, then the device manager to see if the manager is picking up on the ethernet port and Lan cable connected to the laptop.

Wireless network connection problem

Ok with a peripheral on USB or on PC card bay you can try to connect to a Wireless lan:
Please check this tip on the subject
To connect to an existing WLAN you must be sure your wireless card is working: I assume you installed all the related sw coming with the wlan card.
Using the card installed driver check card is enabled and running (in Control Panel/Network connection should be visible and enabled)
Then you can connect to an open Wi-Fi HOTSPOT or to your WLAN you configure with a router connected to your internet modem.
  1. To connect to an existing HOTSPOT: find a location where you know a wi-fi access point (HOTSPOT) is active: Internet cafe,, library, airport,, station, hotel etc.your card should be able to find the existing network when you select "show existing network" in wlan driver. Connect if network is "unsecure" (= no password or key is required) or ask for password if you can get it for a fee (hotel)
  2. To connect to your home or office WLAN be sure to use a router (or access point) with same standard of your card (802-11G or B or A or N) with same security protocol (WEP or WPA) and configure your router Internet access BEFORE wireless access. Connect your PC to your router using a LAN cable and be sure you can browse through the router.(contact your ISP for router specs if you need it: PPOA/E and other). Follow the tip and your router doc for settings
