Could be a loose or broken part or the machine may need some type
of adjustment,,it would be a good idea to have the machine serviced.

No the sounds are not normal,
I would suggest you have the machine looked at by a sewing machine tech.
I have never come across this problem before and would need to look at the machine before making a diagnosis.
Sorry to be of little help but it would be unfair to give bad advice.

SOURCE: Knocking noise when sewing

If the machine does not knock when in straight stitch then it is the stitch width limiter. You would have to take off the side cover with a T20 torx screwdriver. Once open you will see an elongated U-shaped piece with a screw through the bottom of it (its maybe a half inch long or so). Its just above that big bottom thread guide. I think you need a T10 torx driver, loosen that screw and move that u-shaped part slightly (very slightly) so it isn't hitting anymore on the side to side action. It happens but can't really harm anything.
I'm sure thats it.

that is a fifty fifty chance you have to take. It may be something minor rubbing or you could have a slightly bent shaft underneath making noise

First thing, install a brand new needle. A bent/damaged needle will frequently make noises.

Second, if it is mechanical machine (not computerized), it most likely needs a good cleaning and oiling.

Will not zigzag or decorative stitches New to these newer plastic style...

If it continues to make a knocking noise, it could have a bent part or be out of time, in which case you should contact a service repair shop.

My sewing machine started making a clunking noise

Try a brand new needle. A bent, dull, or damaged needle will cause havoc. Changing the needle frequently is necessary to keep the machine functioning well. It is a "very" inexpensive fix for a lot of sewing machine problems.

I have just bought a new bernina 440QE - it makes a loud noise when turned on, which gets louder when you increase the sewing speed - I have a 240 which runs much quieter - is it a fault or is it normal?

That is a great machine, should sound realy good. Should sound just like a 240. Are you lubricating the hook (that is important with the 440). If that does not help I would take it in.

Error 1 message will not leave

Hi - first, check your manual to see if the error is described somewhere. Follow the instructions. If the manual tells you to take the machine in for repair, try a couple things first.

Often when your needle starts to shudder, the thread is caught on something somewhere along the sewing path. Turn off your machine, change your needle, take all of the thread out of the machine and rethread it. Then remove your bobbin to make sure that there is nothing stuck in the bobbin case, or in the area where you insert your bobbin into the machine. Look around the sewing area to see if something looks out of place.

After you insert a new needle and rethreaded your machine, and before you turn the machine back one, try using the wheel to make a few stitches manually. Watch your sewing thread to make sure it is feeding evenly. If the needle does not move up and down correctly, or if you hear a grinding or bumping sound, you probably need to take the machine to be repaired. Otherwise, turn your machine back on. If the error message is gone, try sewing slowly for several inches - if all seems well, increase the speed a little at a time. If anything seems off to you while you sew - stop sewing immediately and look very carefully to see if you can find a problem.
