I will try several of the other solutions, too, but will use yours as well to set the machine to "Light".

SOURCE: The crust of the bread is thick and hard. What is

Are you using water? Water will make a crust crunchier, while substituting milk will give you a squishier crust. Also depends on what kind of bread you're making.

My bread always comes out looking to dark

Your oven is probably getting hotter than the thermostat you set it for reads. The outside of the bread is probably getting done too quickly and by the time the center is, the crust is dried out. Try a lower setting and see if it works. And you may have to adjust the timing. Sounds like your oven needs a new element maybe.

My panasonic SD 255 breadmaker, after quite a lot of use, is now baking bread with a harder crust than it did in its youth. We can get a softer crust by using the Sandwich loaf setting but then we can...

You never said if you remembered to select the LIGHT Crust setting each time. Did you? Are you? If you ARE using the LIGHT Crust setting and finished loaves are still too dark, I would have to say it's time for a replacement breadmaker. Nothing lasts forever my friend. Besides, it sounds like you got your money's worth anyway, right?

I've owned over 200 breadmaker myself so you can bet that what I'm saying is true. Sorry for the bad news friend.

Hope this helps!

Hard crust

Hello roszejon,

Dark crusts are usually a result of heat being too high, too long, and sometimes also a function of the chemistry of the bread. Since you're setting it on "light", either your breadmaker needs repair/recalibration, or there's something about the recipe. Odds are that the breadmaker needs repair.

If I can be of further assistance, or if you have questions about any of my response(s), please let me know before rating me.

If this solves the issue, please rate it accordingly. My goal is to earn a "FixYa" rating from everyone I help.

Thanks for using Fixya.com,

Jon

My crust keeps burning

It seems like the strength of the heat/oven varies a lot from a machine to another... Mine works great with most recipes, but my parents' burns the crust everytime. The only adivce I can give you is to check on the baking process and stop your machine when the bread has a golden crust. It doesn't solve the problem, but at least you get your bread...
