SOURCE: question on a day and night gas forced air heater

it very well sounds like your fan switch , does your fan work at all, like in ac mode on by turning the fan on/auto switch on the thermostat to ON. If the fan does come on its the more and likely the limit switch. if it doesnt come on it could be the motor or the run capacitor. the limit switch has a dial on it that as it heats up it spins clicking on at a desired set temp ussually about 120 to 150 degrees F. turning on the fan if the fan doen't come in the the next setting clicks off the gas valve turning off the burners ussually set at about 220 degrees F. now if the fan is working when the heater is satisfied there is a setting at about 90 deegrees F. that shuts the fan off hope this helps

SOURCE: Goodman furnace burner ignites then shuts off in about 10 seconds

if you have replaced the flame sensor and it will not stay lit, the draft safety switch may be opening. It works on positive and negative pressure created by the inducer fan motor. You may have a restriction in your heat exchanger or if is a high efficiency furnace, it may not have the drain tube installed properly with a trap. The trap works just like the trap under your sink and if water isnt in the trap, the pressures can be effected enough to open the draft switch(some call it an air pressure switch)

SOURCE: 80% ducane furnace makes several attempts to

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

Check for 24 volts across the gas valve terminals!

Turn off the power to furnace.
on the last burner to light there is a small metal rod in front of the burner. This is a safety called the flame sensor. It is dirty. Unscrew it from the bar ( 1 Screw) unplug the connector wire from it and clean it with steel wool. it will be kind of burnt. Plut back in place and turn on the furnace to cycle.

My Ruud furnace sometimes will blow up the exust vent when lighting

If the burners are inshot burners (look like little jets), Shut the furnace and gas off. Take a 5/16 nutdriver and remove the four screws that hold the gas manifold and the gas orifice's. This should pull back, and each of the inshot burners will also have the same size screws...one per burner. Remove each burner individually and look @ the front of the burners where the "wings" are. With a flat head screwdriver, slightly open the wings which act as flame runners. This will allow the gas to run across evenly so the flame will hit each burner and not build up gas and blow like you are experiencing. Reassemble and run test with gas & power on. Good luck

Our Gibson KG7TC060D24B "tries" to start, but the shuts off before ignition. Technicians have replaced the control panel and other components but the problem persists, with the furnace working for a few...

This is possible, however it is possible they are missing something simple. I hope you can follow along.
1) Is this a Sealed Combustion Furnace, meaning you cannot get to the burners even after you remove the Door Panels?

2) If yes, is this furnace vented with pvc/plastic piping?
3) If yes, do both pipes go outside?
4) If yes then try this.

1) Turn the main power off to the furnace
2) Remove the Door Panel to the burner section.
3) Turn Furnace back and turn the thermostat all the way up.
4)Look into the burner compartment and tell me if the igniter glows red. If it does and the goes out with the burners not coming on.

5) If you feel comfortable or know of someone that is.
6) Turn the furnace off, remove the panel that conceals the burner compartment.

7) Turn the furnace on, if the igniter glows red and the burners ignite. Your problem is in the venting system. Most likely the intake pipe if it goes outside. It could be plugged or something is blocking it. If the burners do not ignite the next thing to make sure that is happening is that the Exhaust blower is operating and you can feel air outside where the pipe terminates. If you it is but no very strong, then your problem could be the inducer motor or to small of vent pipe.

If you could, send me some information about how it starts up
1) Main blower may come on and shut off, make sure the blower runs in on position 1st then back to Auto position. If it does not, you have another problem.

2) The Exhaust blower should come on next
3) About 17secs. later the igniter should glow red.
4) You will here the gas valve make a click
5) The Burners will ignite
6) The flame sensor rod on the far left hand side of the burner will keep the burner lit. If it is dirty the burners will shutdown.
7)About 90secs. later the main blower will come on.

Goodman furnace gmh95090cxac wont stay lit keeps clicking will lite then clicks back off what would be the problem

Hello, if the burners light but do not stay on for more than 10 seconds, I would clean the flame sensor. The flame sensor is a metal rod that is on the opposite side of the Igniter, sometimes it gets coated by oxidation and does not sense the burner flame and shuts the Furnace down. To clean to kill power to tje furnace, remove flame sensor and clean with a steel wool, then reinstall and start Furnce back up. If this does not work then most likely the Igniter is too weak to ignite the gas and will have ro be replaced.

My goodman furnace 80703 fan comes on ignitor glows burner starts , cuts off in 10 secs, furnace starts cycle again. home no heat

I am not a furnace tech but, there are several inputs to a gas valve. There must be an 1) electrical/mechanical indication that there is a draft fan running (to move potentially explosive gas so it doesn't accumulate), 2) adequate gas pressure to the valve, 3) the thermostat must be calling for heat 4) and electrical indication that there is an ignition source. In your scenario, you have the source of ignition, the gas valve is picking up the burner but the gas valve believes there is something missing so it shuts off the gas to the burner. In this case, I suppose you might not have enough gas pressure (is another gas appliance running or is the line to the furnace too small?), a thermocouple probably isn't the problem since the burner wouldn't pick up if the gas valve didn't believe the ignition source wasn't good enough. You could have a plugged chimney or exhaust pipe if it is direct vented since there is also a pressure switch that detects whether there is enough draft once the burner picks up. Really should call a furnace person especially if you don't have a carbon monoxide detector that you trust. If you think you are capable of continuing, you could jumper the various inputs the the gas valve one by one until the burner picks up and stays picked up. Whichever terminals you jumper that accomplish this, is the culprit. Look at the schematic on the side cover to the furnace for this information. Hope this helps...

I've got a 23 yr old 30DV3 whose pilot light works, and the thermostat & heating element seem to work, but not well. With the thermostat set at full hot, it just barely throws out any heat at all. ...

As I'm sure you already know, Empire Comforts Systems, no longer makes that model heater and hasn't for some years, now. I mentioned that, because if your unit needs parts, they may be almost impossible to get. In any event, there are a several things that may be causing the problem.

  • Low Gas Pressure - Burner is not receiving enough gas. Check for obstructions and have gas pressure at the unit checked.
  • Clogged burner or air intake (venturi valve) is partially clogged. Clean burner ports and venturi valve.
  • Gas line Shut Off Valve at heater not fully open. Check Gas line Shut Off Valve.
At 23 years old, you've gotten your money's worth out of this unit and it may be time to replace it. Empire makes several Direct Vent Wall Furnaces that are rated as High Efficiency Furnaces. In the long run, the money saved in fuel cost, would be worth installing a new one.

Hope this helps you solve the problem.

Flame sensor needs to be cleaned. turn off the furnace power switch or breaker. pull the flame sensor located in the burner runner section of the furnace. It will be easy to locate because it has 1 wire running to it. pull the screw being very careful not to harm anything else. get the sensor out. inspect it for cleanliness. clean the sensor with light grade sand paper gently. re-install the sensor plug the wire back on. restart your furnace and this should fix the problem.

Rheem gas furnace pilot lights, but no burners or fan

If the burners do not fully ignite, the sensor will shut the furnace down. The lack of sufficient burner flame is a gas valve or gas pressure problem within the valve.
Replacing the gas valve with the original one may get you going. I surely suggest a professional service company for safety reasons and a thorough inspection. A 20 year old furnace is past it's normal life span.

Gas furnace wont stay lite

I'm a little confused by your terminology. You are saying you have a pilot lite and electric heat strips? Are you possibly meaning burners? Is the heater running for 2 hours straight without shutting off? how cold is it there? Lastly what temperature do you have the thermostat set at and how close does it get to the temp. before it shuts off?
